Sale Sharks who host the Scarlets at the AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday in the final round of Pool qualifying matches for the LV= Anglo Welsh Cup semi-finals, had their own hopes of a place in the knockout stages extinguished last weekend, when they were beaten in the Northeast by an experience Newcastle Falcons side.

Sale Sharks were left with just one win from their first three Pool fixtures, having also lost at Leicester Tigers at Welford Road back in October of last year. They lie third in Pool 2 with five points, eight behind the leaders the Cardiff Blues. Scarlets slim hopes of making the last four were also vanquished early on, and despite last weekend's victory by 27-18 against London Irish at the Parc y Scarlets, they were already certain of elimination, as the result of defeats to the Northampton Saints and Cardiff Blues.

With the 6-Nations Championship and its U20s equivalent starting this weekend, both sides will be forced to field weakened sides, packed with fringe and academy players. However, with both sides struggling in eighth position in their respective domestic leagues, they will look to Saturday's game to help build momentum into the latter part of the season.

Saturday, January 26th, the Anglo Welsh Cup will see the Sale Sharks and the Scarlets play in Salford at 15:00 local time and GMT. The Sale Sharks are third on the second pool's table. They have five points right now, and are tied with two of the other three teams on the table, with five points each. That's because each of these teams have won one of the two games that they have played, but three of those teams were able to earn a bonus point, including the Sale Sharks. The only team without one is the Leicester Tigers.
