Bath and Gloucester open Round 11 of the Aviva Premiership at the Rec on Friday Evening, with a West Country derby. After making it through to last season's Grand Final, where they were beaten by Saracens, Bath had high hopes of another successful campaign. However, the season has been one of struggle from day one, and a run of only one win in the last five Premiership games they have played, has seen them slip to 9th in the table, 15 points behind the play-off positions.
Gloucester, who have enjoyed great success in defence of their European Challenge Cup, find themselves just one place and four points above Friday's hosts in the Premiership table. Like Bath Rugby, the Cherry and Whites are also on a poor run of results, with only a 27-14 home win against London Irish at the beginning of January being their only win in the tournament in their last four attempts.
Home advantage will just about make Bath favourites to claim the victory. If they do register a fourth win of the Premiership season, it will be a sixth successive win against Gloucester Rugby, and maintain an unbeaten home record against their neighbours from up the M5 that stretches back to February 2012.

Two of the giants of West Country rugby will lock horns at the Rec in Bath on Friday night, when Bath Rugby will play host to the Cherry and Whites of Gloucester. Gloucester come to the game, off of the back of a Heineken Cup defeat in Munster last weekend, though they made wholesale changes to their side for that visit into the cauldron of Thomond Park in Limerick, and for an hour pushed the Irish Province the whole way.
The much changed team played an expansive brand of rugby, which suited the likes of wing, Charlie Sharples who scampered over for a try in Limerick, and revelled in the style of rugby being played by the team. Sharples himself admitted that he enjoyed the game, as he had plenty of balls in the hands, despite the bruising nature of the clash. The international winger saying that he had never been so battered and bruised after a game before.
Gloucester will need to show the same intensity in the physical battle when they step out onto the Rec, and to put Bath under the same defensive pressure as they applied to Munster, which held their hosts at bay for so long in the Heineken Cup encounter. Bath is currently sitting in fourth place in the Aviva Premiership, while Gloucester Rugby is floundering down in tenth position, as a result of their inconsistent performances in the domestic tournament this season.
