Exeter Chiefs                          Harlequins
Saturday 17th September 14:00 GMT

Last season's Aviva Premiership Grand Final runners up, the Exeter Chiefs, are still winless after the first two weeks of the new season. On Saturday they entertain Harlequins at their Sandy Park home. Two defeats, away to wasps and at home to reigning Champions Saracens, leave the Chiefs at the foot of the fledgling table. Not only will the Devon based club be looking to register a first win of the campaign at the weekend, but they will be defending a proud record on their own ground that hasn't seen them lose back to back fixtures since September 2014.

Harlequins squeezed a narrow victory 21-19 over Bristol at Twickenham in Round 1 of the Premiership, despite being outscored 2-3 tries, but last weekend they came unstuck at Sale Sharks, as their poor away form continued. The only away trip that has brought victory to the Londoners since early January, was on 1st May when they beat the doomed London Irish 32-25 in reading. The past two seasons have seen the Exeter Chiefs complete season's doubles over the Quins. The last time that they suffered defeat against Saturday's visitors was in May 2014, when Quins won a thrilling encounter by 30-29 at Sandy Park.

What promises to be the match of the round in the Aviva Premiership this weekend, takes place at Sandy Park in Devon, when second placed Exeter Chiefs, welcome the aristocrats of Harlequins from London, who currently sit immediately below the Chiefs in the table. The Chiefs have been producing probably the most exciting rugby of any of the participating clubs in the Premiership this season, and have crossed their opponents line 14 times in just four matches so far. The next best total being the 10 that Bath have managed. Quins on the other hand have one of the least effective attacks in the tournament, with just six tries to their credit. Despite their struggles to get over the opposition line, the London based club have lost just one match this season in all competitions, a narrow 19-22 defeat at the Leicester Tigers in Round 2.

The Chiefs were unlucky to lose their opening Premiership fixture by 17-19 at the Rec against Bath, and have lost just once since in all tournaments, a 13-25 defeat in their opening Champions Cup fixture against the Ospreys in Swansea. Exeter Chiefs who completed a season double over the Harlequins last season, haven't lost at Sandy Park since Gloucester were the visitors to Sandy Park way back on the 3rd January.

Rob Baxter's Exeter Chiefs will continue their bid to establish themselves as top six club in the Aviva Premiership on Sunday, when the visitors to Sandy Park are the aristocrats of Harlequins. Both clubs have won two of their opening three fixtures, with Exeter filling fourth place in the table thanks to securing two bonus points, while Harlequins are in sixth, not yet having secured a bonus point of any sort. The Chiefs have certainly made the more impressive start in the early weeks of the season, and could easily have posted three wins from three, but suffered a narrow 24-20 defeat to Leicester Tigers in round two. Interestingly, Sunday's contest is between a team that struggles on home soil, Exeter have won just one Premiership fixture at Sandy Park in 2014, and a club that appears more potent when away from their Stoop home. Quins have won three of their last four away games in the competition.

The sides met three times last season, with Harlequins completing an Aviva Premiership Rugby double over their opponents from Devon, winning by just a point 30-29 at Sandy Park in May, while the Chiefs won the Anglo-Welsh Cup match between the two which also took place at Exeter back in November.

With the LV Anglo Welsh Cup nestling in the Sandy Park trophy cabinet, the season will be considered a massive success by many Exeter Chiefs supporters. However, their ambitions are set at a higher level these days, and they are still chasing the goal of a European Cup place next season. A win against Harlequins will keep them in the hunt for seventh spot in the Premiership table, and a play-off match against the seventh placed team in the French Top 14 competition, the prize for the winners being a spot in the European Cup next season. Harlequins by contrast are still chasing a place in the post-season Aviva Premiership play-offs. To have a chance of being in with a chance of the title, they will need a minimum of six points from their final two games. Even then, they will need results elsewhere to go their way, if they are to secure a top four finish. Harlequins have won the last three Premiership matches that they have played, since losing at Wembley to the table topping Saracens by 13-39 in round 17. Exeter’s form is somewhat contrasting to Harlequins. Having won just once in their last four Premiership games, a narrow 38-33 success at the bottom club Worcester Warriors in round 19.

Harlequins have won just once previously at Sandy Park, an 11-9 triumph on New Year’s Eve 2011. The Exeter Chiefs hold the upper hand in recent meetings, with two wins out of the last three games the two clubs have played against each other in the competition.
