The Aviva Premiership gets under way on Friday Evening, with many club's welcoming back their England internationals, slightly earlier than they had anticipated, due to the national team's early exit from the World Cup. Harlequins will welcome Wasps to the Stoop, for what is strangely no longer a London derby, thanks to Wasps decision to move their base to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry last season.

Quins and London Wasps faced each other on four occasions last season, having been drawn together in the same European Champions Cup Pool. The results bore a strange symmetry, with the home side winning each of the Premiership matches, whilst the European fixtures were won by the away club.

If Wasps are to get off to a winning start, they will have to record a first success at the Stoop since 2007, and a first opening day victory since 2011, when they beat Saracens at Twickenham, as part of the London double header. Harlequins on the other hand, have a habit of getting their season off to bright starts. They have suffered just one opening day loss since 2006, when ironically they were beaten by Friday's visitors at Twickenham, as part of that season's London double header.

Harlequins and wasps that face each other at The Stoop on Saturday have had contrasting experiences in both weeks 1 and 2 of this seasons Aviva Premiership tournament. In week 1 at the London Double header, Harlequins picked up a victory that they were ultimately thankful to secure, after a slump if form and intensity in the second half. On the same day at Twickenham, Wasps pushed Saracens all the way, and probably should have come away with a win, instead of an unlucky 34-28 defeat.

Round 2 last weekends, saw Harlequins held scoreless in a game for the first time since they faced London Irish in the 2009 Premiership semi-final. While London Wasps continued their form from the Saracens fixture, and beat the reigning champions Northampton Saints at Adams Park by 20-16.

Last week against the Saints, Wasps ended a long losing streak against those particular opponents. They will need to do so again on Saturday if they are to record a second consecutive victory. They have beaten Harlequins just once in the last 10 meetings of the two clubs in all competitions. A 17-18 success at the Stoop in February 2013, which is their only win at the venue for this week's match since 2007.

A mighty London derby clash is in prospect on Sunday, when Harlequins welcome London Wasps to the Stoop. For their return Aviva Premiership match. Harlequins are currently sitting in fourth place in the Premiership table, which is the last of the play-off positions, just one point and two place above their visitors.

While Wasps will be concerned with the battle they have on their hands on Sunday, they would, no doubt, also like to avenge their defeat on the opening day of the season, when the two clubs met at Twickenham Stoop as a part of the London double header, with Harlequins squeezing home by 17-16, when Wasps fly-half, Andy Goode saw his last kick of the game conversion strike a post and bounce back into play.

Wasps will have to buck the trend of their recent visits to the Stoop in they want to leapfrog over their hosts in the table, having recorded just a single victory from their last nine visits. Though that 17-16 success did come just 12 months ago.

Harlequins have suffered a stuttering season, no better illustrated than their recent form in the Premiership, where they have lost two of their last three games, and yet still command a play-off position. However, they have won their last three Aviva home games, though on Sunday they will have to cope without Chris Robshaw who skippers England against Scotland this weekend.
