Leicester Tigers                          Bath Rugby
Sunday 25th September 14:00 GMT

After a poor Aviva Premiership campaign last time round, that ultimately cost head coach, Mike Ford his job, Bath have started the new season in scintillating form, and at the end of Round 3, head the Premiership table, as one of only three clubs with a 100% winning record. On Sunday, Bath Rugby travel to Welford Road to face their old rivals the Leicester Tigers, in what is likely to be the most severe test of their title credentials to date. The Tigers themselves occupy fourth position, having won two of the three matches that they have played. Although they have been far less convincing in doing so, than have Sunday's visitors.

Last time the Leicester Tigers appeared in front of their own fans, they were defeated by Wasps 22-34, and they will be eager to avoid back to back Welford Road losses, something that they haven't suffered since October 2011. Last weekend the Tigers beat Newcastle Falcons by 14-13, but only after the Falcons had missed a last kick drop goal in front of the posts, and they had to come from 7-31 behind to Gloucester at Kingsholm to win in Round 1. Bath have not now lost since Round 21 last season, when they lost by a single point at the Northampton Saints, since when they have reeled off four straight victories.

Neither Leicester Tigers nor Bath, who meet in Sunday at Welford Road Stadium in round 5 of the Aviva Premiership, have yet to hit their best form this season. Despite the lack of cohesion that both clubs have displayed in the opening weeks, their results on the pitch have still been more than acceptable. The Leicester Tigers are in fourth position in the Premiership table, having won three of their four matches to date. The only defeat that they have incurred in any tournament this season, came in Round 4 of the Premiership, when they travelled to Sandy Park and were beaten by the Exeter Chiefs by 6-19. Since that loss they have registered two Champions Cup victories.

Bath are just a place behind Leicester in the table, although they have won a game fewer in the Premiership. Last weekend, the West Country club produced by far their most impressive performance of the campaign, as they beat Leinster in the Champions Cup in front of a record crowd at the Rec. Although the Tigers won the Premiership fixture between the two clubs last season, that was played in the East Midlands by 17-8, that was the only success that they have enjoyed against Bath Rugby in the last seven meetings of the two sides in all tournaments.

Welford Road sees the next chapter in probably the greatest rivalry in English club rugby of the last 30 years, when the Leicester Tigers host Bath Rugby in Round 12 of the Aviva Premiership. Although occupying an unusually low position in the table at the halfway stage of the regular season, the Tigers are one of the inform teams in the competition of the past couple of months, with just a single defeat in the last six Aviva Premiership matches that they have played. They have also made Welford Road Stadium once more into the fortress that it once was, where visiting teams turned up, with few hopes or expectation of emerging victorious. In the last 14 months. the only visiting Premiership team to win on Leicester's own ground were London irish, who sneaked a 22-19 win in late September.

However, Bath who lie in second place, just a single point behind the reigning champions, Northampton Saints, are one of the few clubs who consistently beat the Tigers, and who on current form will enter the Tiger's lair who confidence. Bath Rugby are on a run of seven successive wins in all competitions, their last defeat coming against the Exeter Chiefs in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in November.

Bath Rugby's title chasing ambitions will be severely tested at Welford Road Stadium on Sunday, when they visit Leicester Tigers. Before last weekend, Bath Rugby had won eleven games on the trot in all competitions, was the form club in England, and was making noises about being big hitters once more amongst the elite of the professional clubs in England. However, last weekend in the East Midlands, at Franklin's Gardens, they were well and truly put in their place by the Northampton Saints, who plundered a try scoring bonus point victory to the extent of 43-25. They now have to travel to Welford Road to face a Leicester Tigers side that has only suffered one defeat in their last eight matches in all competitions. That being at the Aviva Premiership leaders, Saracens, on 21 December.

While Bath have not lost back to back matches in the Premiership since December 2012, they will have to overcome a Tigers side that has been beaten just once in their last thirteen encounters at Welford Road in all tournaments. A 16-23 loss to Harlequins at the beginning of November in the Aviva, added to which, Bath have been successful on just a single occasion from their 17 previous Premiership battles at Welford Road, over a decade ago when they won 13-12 in November 2003.
