Leicester Tigers                          Saracens
Sunday 1st January 15:00 GMT

Leicester's three game winning run in the Aviva Premiership was brought to an end at Sandy Park in Devon on Christmas Eve, by the resurgent Exeter Chiefs, who soundly beat the Tigers by 31-10, and pushed them down to fifth place in the table as a result. The Tigers now find themselves four points outside the play-off positions, and with the daunting task of facing the reigning Champions and current table leaders Saracens on New Year's Day. At least the Leicester Tigers will have home advantage against Sarries, and will gain some confidence in the knowledge that they have suffered just a solitary defeat at the Welford Road venue in the last 14 games that they have played there in all competitions, a 22-34 beating by Wasps in Round 2 of the Premiership.

However, Saracens are the club in fine form, whose only loss in the Premiership since Round 4, came at the Rec against Bath, who squeezed out a narrow 14-11 victory at the beginning of December. Quite amazingly, Saracens have had their own try line crossed just nine times in the 11 games that they have played in this season's Premiership, which is 8 less than the next best defensive record in the league.

The reigning Aviva Premiership Champions and current table topping Saracens, travel to Welford Road on Sunday, to face the Leicester Tigers. They will be attempting to be just the second visiting team in any tournament to win at the venue in the past 12 months. The others being the Sale Sharks who claimed a 10-3 victory at the beginning of February. Saracens who have been at or very close to the top of the table all season, have just a two point advantage over the Exeter Chiefs, but with six games of the regular season remaining, are a substantial 12 points ahead of fifth placed Tigers.

The Leicester Tigers have struggled to cope with international calls on their squad during the 6-Nations tournament, but have managed to stay in contention for the play-offs. They are just a point behind their great East Midlands rivals the Northampton Saints. Welford Road hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Saracens, with just one victory at the venue since September 2011. During a period of unmatched success for Sarries in the domestic game, the fixture in February 2013 which ended 32-27 to the visitors, was their only success. However, Saracens have held sway in recent encounters at any venue, with the Tigers winning just once in their last eight meetings in all competitions. A 31-27 win in Round 22 of the 2013/14 season.

Something has to give, when the Leicester Tigers play host to Saracens at Welford Road on Sunday in Round 7 of the Aviva Premiership. The Tigers have been beaten just once in their last 10 Premiership matches at Welford Road, when they were beaten by London Irish in Round 4 of this season's tournament. Saracens who were beaten in their last away game in the Premiership, their only defeat to date in the current Premiership campaign, 11-21 at the Rec against Bath, have not lost successive games on the road since New Year 2011. The backup strength of both club's will be tested to the limit, as what should be one of the club matches of the season, comes in the middle of the Autumn International series, with both sides seriously affected by international requirements.

Tigers have won four of their last five matches in all tournaments, although only one of those was in the Premiership. Two wins were in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, while the other came in the European Champions Cup against Ulster. The visitors on Sunday, who are currently second in the table, are one of the few clubs with a positive record in recent times at Welford Road, where they have won on four of their last six visits.

There would appear that there is little riding on the Leicester against Saracens match at Welford Road on Saturday, with both sides have secured their places in the play-off mini competition for the Aviva Premiership title. However, such is the congestion in the table below table topping Saracens, which the Leicester Tigers find themselves with everything still to play for. A win for the Tigers, coupled with a Northampton defeat at home to Wasps, although unlikely, would lift Leicester above their East Midlands rivals, and secure them a home semi-final spot. While defeat to Saracens, and a Bath win at Harlequins, would see the Tigers slip to fourth place, and an away semi-final at Allianz Park, against Saturday’s opponents. A daunting prospect, even for the Tigers, against a side that have won 19 of their 21 games in the Premiership this season, and have also qualified for the Heineken Cup final.

Saracens themselves, have nothing riding on the result. They have already set a new points record for a Premiership season, beating the record previously held by Leicester. They will want to keep the momentum going as they head towards the business end of the season, but with the Heineken Cup final just 3 weeks away, as well as the play-offs themselves, it may be a chance for the frings and back up players to make a case for inclusion in the big games still to come before the season closes.
