Sunday 20th March 15:00 GMT

Sunday will see the Madejski Stadium in Reading, home of London Irish, host its 16th St. Patrick's Day Premiership fixture, when Gloucester are the visitors. The fifteen previous matches have results in eight wins for the Exiles and seven for their visitors on the day. With just six games left to play ahead of this weekend's round of matches, the Exiles find themselves on the edge of the relegation precipice. Bottom of the table, and eight points adrift of the club above them, the Newcastle Falcons. However, if there is hope for Irish, it is in their form at the Madejski, where they have won three of the their last four Premiership outings, only the high flying Exeter Chiefs emerging victorious in Round 13.

The Cherry and Whites from Gloucester Rugby are also desperate for the points, although in their case, it is to keep in touch with the clubs above them, and to retain some hope of making into the knockout phase of the tournament. Currently in seventh place in the table, Gloucester go into the weekend's fixtures eight points outside of the top four, with just six games to play. While Sunday's result will not settle anything in the way of the play-off or relegation battles, for the losers, the outcome will almost be terminal for their end of season aspirations.

Both London Irish and Gloucester who clash at the Madejski Stadium in Reading on Sunday, will both be grateful for the troubles that are plaguing newly promoted London Welsh upon their return to the Aviva Premiership. London Irish started the season with what appeared to be a large dose of bad luck, sliding to at least two defeats, when they appear to have done enough to have won the games. Subsequent events throws that theory of them being the unluckiest club in the Premiership in to doubt. They have managed just two wins in the Premiership from eight attempts, and have now lost four games on the trot since they won against a weakened Grenoble in France in the European Challenge Cup, and have not won in the Aviva Premiership since they travelled to Welford Road and beat the Leicester Tigers In round 4.

That run of poor form has seen the Exiles slip to eleventh in the table, with only the winless London Welsh beneath them. Gloucester Rugby have not fared much better during the current campaign. Three wins from the first eight rounds sees them just two places above Sunday's opponents, and they are on a run of three successive Premiership defeats.

Both London Irish and Gloucester are grateful for the woes that beset Worcester Warriors this season, as without the winless Warriors rooted to the foot of the Aviva Premiership table, both clubs would find themselves embroiled in the centre of a relegation dog fight. As it turns out, if Worcester should manage to find some form, and a handful of results from somewhere, although this appears most unlikely, then these two sides might yet find themselves battling tooth and nail for survival in the premiership. Since defeating Harlequins in round 5 at their Madejski Stadium home, by 18-13, the exiles have lost 5 straight games in the Aviva, and have slipped to 11th position in the table, with only hapless Worcester beneath them. Gloucester had endured a similar losing streak before last weekend, when they were victorious in the M5 derby against Worcester. Winning a dull and uninspiring game at Kingsholm by 12-6, with neither side managing to record a try. To find Gloucester's last away victory, and indeed their only away day success in any competition since February, it is necessary to go back to 28th September, when they defeated Newcastle at Kingston Park.

The two Premiership games between the clubs last season were won by the away side, and Gloucester Rugby have won on the previous two visits to the Madejski stadium.

Reading is the venue for the Aviva Premiership match between the London Irish and Gloucester Rugby. This event will take place on Saturday, May 5th at 14:00 local time and 13:00 GMT. The London Irish are in the fourth to last spot on the table with 21 games played just like all of the other teams. They have been able to win just seven of those twenty one games, and also had one draw. That leaves them with thirteen losses and they have earned 41 points total. Gloucester Rugby is in eighth with eight wins and one draw, for a total of 44 points.
