London Wasps                          London Irish
Saturday 7th May 14:30 GMT

Wasps are certain of a place in the Aviva Premiership play-offs, but are still hoping that they can clinch a top two finish, and claim the reward of a home semi-final. Following last weekend's defeat at Sandy Park against the Exeter Chiefs, just a second defeat in 13 Premiership fixtures, Wasps dropped to third spot, two points behind the Chiefs. A win at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday against the doomed London Irish will throw the London Wasps a top two lifeline, although they will still require the Chiefs to lose at Harlequins in their final match. Should Wasps overhaul the Chiefs, it will be their first home semi-final in the Premiership since 2008.

Despite defeat in their previous two games, against Saracens in the Champions Cup semi-final and last weekend against the Chiefs, the Coventry based club will be firm favourites to beat the Exiles, who will be playing their final Premiership fixture for at least a season. The Exiles have recorded just a solitary victory in the last games that they played in the tournament, a 23-18 success against Gloucester in Reading on March 20th, and have lost all ten away matches in the competition this season.

One of the biggest controversies of the Aviva Premiership season, will finally come to an end on Sunday, when Wasps effectively complete their move from High Wycombe, to their new home in Coventry, where they will face London Irish in their first fixture at the new venue. Wasps expect to play in front of a record Premiership crowd, for a match being played at a club's own ground, as opposed to special matches that have brought in vast crowds at Twickenham Stadium and Wembley. It is expected that somewhere in the region of 27,000 spectators will come through the gates on Sunday, as the Ricoh Arena becomes the 34th ground to host a Premiership fixture. London Wasps will be hoping to make a winning start at their new home, as they seek to avoid a third consecutive Aviva defeat for the first time since last March, although they come into the match on the Back of successive back to back European Champions Cup wins against the Frenchmen of Castres.

The Exiles will be hoping to spoil the party, as they have problems of their own near to the foot of the table. Bottom but one, and with just two wins to their credit, they are grateful for the continued woes of London Welsh, for their not being embroiled, as yet at least, in a dog fight relegation battle.

Although the woes that have befallen Worcester Warriors on the field this season, have made them almost certain to fill the end of season relegation position from the Aviva Premiership, the London Irish will have been mighty relieved at last weekend's stunning win at the then table toppers, Saracens, as the success puts them a massive 17 points clear of the Warriors, and to all intents and purposes safe from relegation. Wasps by contrast had a heart breaking weekend, losing their London derby to the Harlequins 10-11, as the result of a last gasp try. A result that kept Harlequins in the end of season play-off positions, and condemned Wasps to sit in seventh position, although just 4 match points behind their conquerors. London Wasps who host the match against the exiles at Adams Park on Saturday, have lost only one of their last five home matches in all tournaments, by a narrow 15-17 margin, to the current league leaders, Northampton Saints, just before Christmas.

Although Irish are languishing in tenth place in the table, they have lost just once in their last six matches that they have played in all competitions, which by coincidence, was at Adams Park to Wasps, in the Anglo-Welsh Cup by 15-22, just three weeks ago.

The London Wasps and the London Irish go for an All London Showdown in Wycombe on Saturday, March 3rd in the Aviva Premiership, in a 15:00 local time match. The London Wasps come in at the second to last spot on the table right now after an abysmal season thus far. The only team doing worse right now is the Newcastle Falcons. The Wasps have just four wins out of sixteen games played, and have earned no points for draws. They have 23 points at the moment. The London Irish are a little bit better off, with six wins and one draw for a total of 35 points.
