London Wasps                          Newcastle Falcons
Sunday 30th October 14:30 GMT

Wasps entertain the Newcastle Falcons at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Sunday, looking to extend their run of success to just one defeat in nine matches in all competitions this season. That solitary reverse came at the Allianz park in Round 6 of the Premiership, when they were well and truly put in their place by the reigning Champions Saracens, who secured a bonus point victory by 30-14. The Saracens result is enough to consign London Wasps to sit in second position in the table, one point behind their conquerors.

The Coventry based club have won their last 13 fixtures at the Ricoh, the last defeat they suffered on their own ground was against Saracens on December 27th. The Falcons who were expected to be embroiled in a relegation battle with Bristol and Worcester this season, have made a solid start to the Aviva Premiership campaign, winning three of their six games to date. The 14 points that the Falcons have collected place them in sixth position in the table, a full 12 points clear of bottom of the pile Bristol. Falcons ended a winless run away from home in the Premiership, that stretched back 23 months, when they beat Gloucester 18-13 at Kingsholm in Round 4.

Wasps may be only one place outside the Aviva Premiership play-off positions, but London Wasps are eight points adrift of Harlequins. On Saturday, they will be confident of taking the points from visitors Newcastle Falcons, which will enable them to maintain the pressure on the clubs immediately above them in the table. The Coventry based club, who have been in scintillating form in the Champions Cup, but have been inconsistent in the Premiership, are looking for a third consecutive win in the tournament, having defeated Worcester Warriors at the Ricoh Arena and the Northampton Saints at Franklin's Gardens. The Falcons have struggled from the opening weekend of the season, but will travel to Coventry buoyed by last week's win against Harlequins. That result lifted the Falcons off of the foot of the table, giving them a three point advantage over London Irish, who now occupy the relegation position.

The Falcons do not have a good record on the road, having managed just one win since October 2013, when they beat London Welsh in Oxford, during a season that saw the Exiles lose every game that they played. Saturday will be the Newcastle Falcons first ever trip to the Ricoh Arena, and they will be seeking a first win in five attempts against Wasps.

For London Wasps the first three weeks of the new Aviva Premiership have been very much about what might have been. Having opened the season with a narrow defeat at Twickenham against Saracens, last weekend they slipped to another narrow loss against Harlequins 26-23. Despite recording a memorable victory at Adams Park against the reigning champions, Northampton Saints, in between those losses, Wasps are currently in ninth place in the table. On Sunday, they will hope to secure a third consecutive win at their home ground for the first time since early 2013, when the Newcastle Falcons arrive in the home counties. The Falcons slipped to a 19th successive league defeat last weekend, and having survived in the top flight last season due to the inadequacies of the Worcester Warriors, they are now relying on the defensive weaknesses of newly promoted London Welsh to keep them off of the bottom of the table.

The Falcons best hopes of registering their first win of the season, seem to rest on their ability to get the giants in their backline, Tuilagi brothers (Alesana and Anitelea) and Fijian Sinoti Sinoti, into the game, and present a physical threat that few other sides in the Premiership can offer wide out.

London Wasps currently hold the vital seventh position in the Aviva Premiership table, which would give them a play-off match against a French Top 14 side, with the prize of a place in next seasons European Cup as the prize awaiting the winners. Although Wasps defeated Gloucester at home in round 20 by 38-30, the match was actually staged at Twickenham, meaning that they haven’t actually managed to record a victory at Adams Park since they defeated the Exeter Chiefs on 5th January. The visitors to Adams Park, the Newcastle Falcons, have contrived to lose 14 consecutive matches in the Premiership, since they beat London Irish on 27th October. Fortunately for them, Worcester Warriors have been in even more woeful form this season, meaning that the Falcons have always had a buffer between themselves and relegation. Even then, they still require three league points to be absolutely certain of Premiership rugby at Kingston Park next season.

The last two contests between the two clubs have both resulted in away victories on the day. While the Falcons have won on two out of their last three visits to Adams Park. Another win would secure their safety. However, London Wasps must be favorites to take another giant stride towards a European play-off spot.

Saturday, May 5th the Aviva Premiership will see the London Wasps and the Newcastle Falcons in Wycombe at 14:00 local time and 13:00 GMT. The London Wasps have only won six games out of twenty one played this season, so they sit in the second to last spot on the table with just 32 points. They have no draws, so that puts their total losses at fifteen. As for the Newcastle Falcons, they come in at the very bottom spot, having only won five of twenty games. They did have two draws, and that gives them a grand total of 28 points.
