Two clubs who are still waiting to hit any sort of consistent form this season, face each other in the Aviva Premiership on Friday Evening at Franklins Gardens, when Northampton Saints host the Cherry and Whites of Gloucester. The Saints are currently ninth in the Premiership table, with two wins and 11 points to their credit. Gloucester sit one place belowFriday's hosts, with the same number of points. Saints have won each of their last two fixtures at the Gardens, beating the Exeter Chiefs in the Premiership and Montpellier of the Top 14 in the Champions Cup. These being the only victories that they have enjoyed in the last six games they have played.

Despite Gloucester's lowly position in the Aviva Premiership table, they are unbeaten away from home in all competitions this season. They have beaten Sale in Round 3 and drawn at the Worcester Warriors and Exeter Chiefs, as well as winning at Bayonne in the Challenge Cup. The Cherry and Whites are now on a run of five unbeaten matches away from home in all tournaments, the last time they were beaten on the road was at Leicester back in April. The last Gloucester win against the Saints was in September 2013 at Kingsholm by 26-24, since when the two clubs have played five times. The last occasion that Gloucester Rugby were successful at the Gardens was in February 2013.

Northampton Saints and Gloucester open Round 5 of the Aviva Premiership at Franklins Gardens on Friday Evening, both looking to get their domestic season kick started. After four rounds of competition, Gloucester Rugby are in ninth position in the table, and sit one point and one place above their hosts. The Saints who dominated the regular season during the last campaign, before slipping up at the semi-final stage of the play-off phase, have managed just a single win this season, a crushing victory against the winless Newcastle Falcons in Round 2. That 42-16 success was the only victory that they have enjoyed in their last six Premiership fixtures. The Northampton Saints have lost their last two Premiership matches at the Gardens, both against the reigning Champions Saracens. If they lose again on Friday, it will be the first time that they have been beaten in three successive home fixtures in the tournament since 2011.

Gloucester have managed two wins in the Challenge Cup during the past fortnight, while the Saints also registered two European victories, although they are playing in the Champions Cup, the premier club tournament. The Cherry and Whites have won two of their last three away matches in all tournaments, but they only time that have managed to overcome the Saints at the Garden's since 2011, was when they were triumphant in early 2013 by 27-11.

The new Aviva Premiership season gets under way on Friday night with the reigning Champions Northampton Saints welcoming Gloucester to their Franklins Gardens home venue. After losing at Allianz Park on 13 April, the Saints finished the season with five straight victories, including the dramatic Grand Final at Twickenham, when they reversed the earlier defeat to the Saracens. Northampton Saints haven't failed to win their opening fixture of the Premiership season since 2005, when they were beaten emphatically by their great East Midlands rivals Leicester Tigers, at Welford Road by 0-32.

That opening day form is in stark contrast to that of their West Country visitors, who haven't recorded a Round 1 success since 2009, when they defeated Bath. 2013-14 was a dismal campaign for Gloucester, the finish of which reflected the season as a whole for the Cherry and Whites. Gloucester Rugby managed just one win in their last four Premiership games, when they beat London Irish at Kingsholm in Round 21. Their sole successes on the road this year being a 14-13 win at Sandy park against Exeter on 29th March. This fixture has a history of going with home advantage, the last seven Premiership encounters all being won by the home side on the day.

Gloucester's roller coaster of a season continued last weekend in the Aviva Premiership, when they defeated Harlequins at Kingsholm, a result which knocked the London side out of the top four, play-off positions, and ended a three game losing streak by the Cherry and Whites. However, this weekend, they find themselves with a more daunting challenge, when they travel to Franklin's Gardens to play top of the table, Northampton Saints. The Saints have won eight consecutive matches at the venue since they were beaten by Leicester Tigers last March. The Saints are on a run of 12 matches unbeaten in the Aviva Premiership, a record that only Leicester have bettered, having recorded three better sequences over the Premiership years.

However, Gloucester Rugby will take some confidence from the fact that they are the only side to have beaten the Saints in the Premiership this season, having defeated them at Kingsholm in round 3, and that Northampton's recent record against their visitors, has seen them win just two of the last seven matches between the two clubs. What will give them less confidence is their away record this season. Gloucester has not managed to post an away win in any tournament since 29 December, when they won at London Irish.
