Northampton Saints                          London Irish
Saturday 13th February 15:00 GMT

Somehow, Northampton Saints emerged from the Stoop last weekend with a victory that has kept alive their hopes of making it into the post-season Aviva Premiership Play-offs. With time up and Harlequins ahead, the Londoners attempted to kick the ball off the pitch to end the game, somehow the Saints full-back, Ben Foden kept the ball in play, and after a number of thrilling phases, he himself slid over for the winning try.

A loss at the Stoop would have left the Saints 13 points adrift of the top four in the table, with half the season already completed. Instead they find themselves seven points behind last week's opponents. London Irish, who are the visitors to Franklin's Gardens on Saturday, are in the middle of one of the tightest and most fascinating relegation battles that the Premiership has seen for many years.

Irish won a vital victory in reading against the Worcester Warriors last week, to lift themselves above Newcastle Falcons, and put them a single point behind the Warriors themselves. Saints were beaten in their last home match, against Wasps, but haven't lost successive matches at the Gardens since December 2012. The home side will be confident that they can extend a run of success against the Exiles, that has seen them lose only once to Saturday's opponents at the Gardens in over a decade. A 14-13 Irish win in September 2011.

Reigning Aviva Premiership Champions and current table toppers, Northampton Saints, will be looking to get back to winning ways in the tournament, after losing their last game in the competition to Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium by 7-20. That defeat ended a run of five successive Premiership victories for the Saints. On Friday night, lowly London Irish are the visitors to Franklin’s Gardens, and having won only once at the venue since late 2004, a narrow 14-13 win in September 2011, it will be a surprise if the Saints avoid a second successive Premiership loss, something that they haven’t encountered since last April.

The Exiles, who haven’t defeated the Saints in any competition since October 2012, when they triumphed at the Madejski Stadium by 39-17, will be hoping that the absence of a good proportion of the Northampton Saints normal starting XV, who are away on 6-Nations duty, will provide them with the opportunity for only a second away win since October, to go with their Challenge Cup victory in Italy, against the part-timers of Rovigo.

With London Welsh remaining winless in all competitions this season, the Irish Exiles seem assured of Premiership survival for another season, as they hold a 20 point advantage over their Welsh rivals.

Northampton Saints welcome the exiles of London Irish to Franklins Gardens on Sunday, with their place in the top two of the Aviva Premiership looking seriously under threat, after looking certainties to finish first or second all season. To add to the threat of a top two place, and a home semi-final in the play-offs that comes as a reward for finishing in one of those positions, the side likely to overhaul them, are their great rivals from the East Midlands, Leicester Tigers.

Saints need to halt a three game losing streak in the competition, the latest of which came at table toppers Saracens last weekend, and which includes a loss to the Tigers, which brought to end, a nine game winning streak at the Gardens. The Exiles, although having little left to play for this season, as they sit in tenth position on the table, with no chance of being relegated, but with no chance of European Cup qualification either, produced one of their best performances of the season last weekend in beating Newcastle Falcons by 40-12.

They may find the Northampton Saints a tougher nut to crack, however. Their form at Franklin's Gardens over the past decade will not over much comfort either, as they have just a single win to their name at the ground in that period. A narrow 14-13 success back in September 2011.
