Northampton Saints                          Sale Sharks
Friday 23rd December 19:45 GMT

The Sharks arrive at the Gardens one place and two points behind the Saints in the Aviva Premiership table. Their current run of form is even worse than that of their hosts, having lost the last six games that they have played in all tournaments. The last time that the Sharks collected a victory in the Premiership, was back in Round 7, when they defeated bottom of the table Bristol at Ashton Gate by 31-13. In fact, that success, was the only time that the Sharks have won away from home this season in any tournament. Two clubs that have suffered frustrating campaigns, the Northampton Saints and Sale Sharks, face each other at Franklins Gardens on Friday in the opening fixture of Round 11 in the Aviva Premiership.

The Saints haven't enjoyed the taste of victory in any tournament since they squeezed past the Worcester Warriors by 18-17 in the Premiership back on November 18th, since when they have played and lost four matches. In 10 Premiership fixtures this season, the Northampton Saints have managed to score a mere 14 tries, which is the lowest total of all the clubs in the competition. It is therefore, hardly surprising that they have managed to win just four times this season, and currently occupy a lowly ninth position in the table.

Northampton Saints have won four of their last five Aviva Premiership matches, with their sole loss coming at Kingston Park Stadium against the Newcastle Falcons on 21st February by 25-26. There run of results has seen them climb to the brink of the post-season play-off positions in the table. They Are now in fifth position, a mere two points adrift of Waps who occupy the spot immediately above them. On Saturday, the Saints host the Sale Sharks at Franklin's Gardens, seeking to extend a run of home form that has seen them lose just once at the Gardens since Wasps were the visitors in Round 10.

Sharks recent for is even more impressive than the Northampton Saints. They have lost just once in their last seven Premiership fixtures. That was a surprise defeat at Sixways against lowly Worcester Warriors. In seventh position in the table, the Sale Sharks are just five points outside the play-off top four, but they do have a game in hand on all the clubs above them in the standings. However, unless they can improve on their away form, they will almost certainly fail to claim a post-season spot. The only win they have registered on the road since Round 14 of last season's Premiership, came in early February at Welford Road against the Leicester Tigers by 10-3.

Reigning Aviva Premiership champions, Northampton Saints, returned to the top of the table last weekend, following their win in Reading against the London Irish, coupled with Saracens defeat at Bath on Friday evening. On Saturday they return to the familiar surroundings of Franklin's Gardens to play the Sale Sharks, who haven't registered a win at the Gardens since May 2006. Last season the corresponding fixture resulted in a 33-14 win for the Saints, and was probably even more noticeable for George North, the bulldozing Welsh winger, scoring his first try for the English club. Sharks themselves won last weekend, beating Wasps at the AJ Bell Stadium, once more inspired by the mercurial Danny Cipriani. They now seek consecutive wins in the tournament for the first time since they beat the Saints in the return fixture and Bath last March.

Quite apart from their own poor record when they travel to Northampton Saints, Sale face a side that hasn't lost on their own soil, since they fell to the Leicester Tigers last March. Sale have managed to win two Premiership games this season, both of which were at home, and one of which was against the winless bottom of the table, London Welsh. An away win on Saturday, would probably be the shock result of the season to date.
