A solid argument could be made that Saracens are the strongest team in Europe at present. They qualified from their Champions Cup Pool last weekend, as the only side with a 100% winning record from the six qualifying games they played. They also lead the Aviva Premiership with eight wins from the nine games that they have played so far. That sole defeat coming at the Stoop when they visited Harlequins on January 9th, and slipped to a 23-29 defeat. That loss was in fact the only one that Sarries have suffered in their last 18 matches in all tournaments.

On Saturday, Saracens will host Bath, who are the disappointing story of the current season. Four consecutive defeats have left Bath Rugby eliminated from the Champions Cup, and languishing in ninth position in the Premiership table, a full 21 points behind their hosts on Saturday. The last time Bath enjoyed the taste of victory, was when Worcester Warrior were beaten 21-14 at the Rec on December 27th. While the only time that they have won on the road in the Premiership this season, was in early November in reading, when they thumped London Irish by 45-14.

Of the last 11 meetings between Saracens and Bath, the West Country side have managed just one win, a 21-11 success at the Rec in October 2014. The last time they won on Saracens soil, was back in early 2010, when they were still playing their home matches at Vicarage Road in Watford.

Unfortunately, what should be one of the Aviva Premiership matches of the season, between Saracens and Bath is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, on the same weekend as the second round of 6-Nations fixtures takes place. Both teams will be without a raft of first choice players, required for international duties.

Third place Saracens lost their last Premiership outing against Gloucester at Kingsholm by 23-24, which ended a run of four successive victories in the competition, and they lie in third place in the table, eight points behind their visitors to the Allianz Park on Sunday. When the clubs met earlier in the season at the Rec. the home side dismantled Saracens pack, and were not flattered in any way by the 21-11 scoreline. Victory at the Allianz on Sunday would see the West Country club complete a season double over the “London” outfit for the first time in a decade, 2003/04 being the last time they managed to achieve the feat.

Saracens have a formidable home record, suffering only one defeat at Allianz in a competitive fixture during the past 12 months, when reigning Premiership Champions, Northampton Saints, won there in Round 8. Should Bath Rugby triumph, it will be their first ever win at the venue, their last away win against Saracens coming at Vicarage Road in February 2010.
