Eastern Province Kings are still searching for their first win in Currie Cup 2015, as they go into Thursdays third round of fixtures, against The Pumas in Port Elizabeth. In their opening match at home against the Lions, they found themselves soundly beaten by 14-51, and although last weekend brought a much improved performance against the Sharks away from home, they still slipped to a 25-33 defeat in Durban.

The Eastern Province Kings did manage a try-scoring bonus point at the Sharks, and will also be encouraged going into Friday’s contest, by the fact that their only win in the 2014 campaign came against the Pumas by 26-25, in the final round of regular season fixtures, which was also played in Port Elizabeth. They will also be buoyed by the Pumas poor away from, that saw them win just once on the road in 2014, when they beat the Cheetahs in Round 5.

The Pumas have produced some exciting rugby this season, scoring three tries in each of their two games. The first of which they won against the Sharks at home in Nelspruit by 33-24, thanks to their first half efforts, which gave them an interval lead of 27-7. Last weekend, their efforts were not enough to produce any return in Johannesburg, as they went down 27-44 to the Lions.

A season that has produced nothing but disappointment for the Eastern Province Kings finally comes to an end on Friday, when they host the Pumas at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, in their tenth and final Currie Cup fixture of 2014. Their previous nine games in the tournament, have resulted in nine defeats, and just one losing bonus point to their credit. A staggering 378 points conceded, and a points difference of -198.

They now face the Pumas, who could still just about sneak a semi-final place, if they can manage a try-scoring bonus win against the Kings, and other results go their way on Saturday, without first choice props CJ van der Linde and Charles Marais who are both absent from Saturday's line up with injury. The experienced Van der Linde is out with a toe injury  and Marais misses out through a broken thumb. The pair are replaced by BG Uys and Simon Kerrod, with Martin Ferreira between them at hooker.

The Pumas have suffered four successive defeats, that has seen them slip to sixth in the table, four points behind the Blue Bulls who occupy the fourth and final play-off position. A bonus point win, followed on Saturday with defeats for the Blue Bulls and the Cheetahs, would see the Pumas qualify to play Western Province in the semi-finals.
