Free State                          Blue Bulls
Saturday 22nd October 14:00 GMT

The final of the 2016 Currie Cup will take place on Saturday at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, with the top two seeds, the Free State Cheetahs taking on the Blue Bulls. The Cheetahs finished the regular season with a 100% perfect winning record from their seven matches, and in last weekend's semi-final, they easily disposed of the defending Champions the Lions by a margin of 55-17. The match being over as a contest by the interval, when the Cheetahs led by 26-0. The regular season head to head fixture between the finalists, was played way back in Round 2, also in Bloem, and was won by the hosts 43-20, again after establishing a commanding half-time lead, in this case 24-10.

The Blue Bulls who were beaten twice during the qualifying phase of the tournament, are on a run of five successive wins, including last weekend's semi-final victory against Western Province (WP) by 36-30. For both sides, this will be a first appearance in the final since 2009, when the Bulls claimed the title at Loftus Versfeld by 36-24. The Free State Cheetahs were last crowned Champions in 2007, when they beat the Lions 20-18 in Bloem. Between 2004-2009, the two sides clashed in five finals, with each side winning twice, and the trophy being shared in 2006 after a 28=28 drawn final.

Oh how the Free State Cheetahs would love a return to the halcyon days of the 2004-2009 seasons, when they enjoyed appearances in five out of six Currie Cup finals. They open their 2015 campaign on Saturday, when they host the Blue Bulls, who themselves appeared in seven out of eight finals between 2002-2009. For both of Saturday's protagonists, 2009 represents the last time that they appeared in the final of the tournament. On that occasion, the Blue Bulls were triumphant by 36-24 at their Loftus Versfeld home stadium. The Cheetahs had a poor 2014, with just three wins and a draw during the regular season, giving them a fifth place finish, which meant they missed out on the play-offs. Just one of last season;s wins, against the Griquas came on home soil, as did a draw against the Sharks.

The Cheetahs and Bulls met only once in 2014, which was in Bloem, the venue of Saturday's fixture. The Bulls ran out winners by 31-22. The Bulls themselves just about made it into the play-offs last season, finishing in fourth position, having won six matches. However, they found themselves badly outclassed in the semi-final at Newlands against the eventual winners, Western Province.

With just three rounds of the 2014 Currie Cup regular season to go, Western Province and the Golden Lions look reasonable assured of their places in the post-season knockout semi-final. However, the other two spots are still very much up for grabs. While the Sharks, Pumas and Free State Cheetahs look the most likely to fill those spots, the Blue Bulls are still clinging to a thread of hope that they could yet sneak through on the blindside, and steal a top four place.

Saturday's clash at the Free State Stadium between the Cheetahs and the Bulls will not decide anything for certain, but if the Bulls do lose, their hopes will all but be extinguished, as they would need to win their last two games, and also rely on a highly unlikely sequence of other results to go their way, in order to qualify. The Cheetahs finish their season with matches against the top two, Western Province and the Lions, so know that victory against the Bulls is vital to their chances of climbing into the top four, from their current fifth position. The Bulls had won successive matches before last weekend to raise their hopes that they had the momentum to take them through to the end of the season. However, the champions the Natal Sharks ended that run at Loftus Versfeld, to resurrect their own hopes.
