The Free State Cheetahs broke their 2015 Currie Cup duck last weekend, when they defeated the Griquas in Kimberley by 31-9, but they are likely to face a stiffer test on Friday, when they entertain the current Champions, Western Province in Bloemfontein. The Champions have made an indifferent start in the defence of their title. Having coasted to a comfortable and expected win in Round 1 against the Griquas, but then struggled to overcome Friday's opponents, the Cheetahs, in atrocious weather conditions at Newlands, squeezing home by 9-3.

However, a crushing last quarter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium last weekend, saw Westerns pummelled by the Bulls 29-47, and they now lie 6-points adrift of the Bulls and the Lions. The Cheetahs bonus point success at the Griquas last weekend has lifted them to fifth place on the table with six points to their name, two points outside the vital top four positions.

Having been battered in their only home game to date in Bloem, 19-57 by the Bulls, the Cheetahs may be happy to get as close as last season, when they lost 29-34 when they hosted the Westerns. One of four wins from five games that the Champions registered on the road in 2014. The only loss coming in  Johannesburg, when they lost by just 33-35 to the Lions.

With two weeks of the 2014 Currie Cup, Western Province and the Golden Lions are assured of two of the semi-final places in this season's tournament, while the reigning champions the Natal Sharks need to win one of their final two fixtures to be sure of going through to defend their title. Three sides, who are covered by just one point, are left to fight it out over the last two rounds of matches to secure the all important fourth place in the regular season table.

The Free State Cheetahs currently hold the fourth spot, but are faced with a visit from the table topping Western Province to the Free State Stadium on Saturday. Although already qualified for the semi-finals, and beaten only once this season, Western Province are still not certain of finishing at the top of the pile and securing vital home advantage through the knockout phases. Free State will not therefore, get the benefit of facing a side that might be preparing for fixtures still to come, but will find visitors that are as desperate for victory as they are.

The Cheetahs have to lift themselves for the new challenge, having lost at home last week in a vital game to the Blue Bulls. The win that would have put them on the brink of a last four place, never materialised, as the Bulls outscored them three tries to one, and took the match points 31-22.
