If the Free State Cheetahs defeat the Golden Lions in Johannesburg on Saturday in the semi-final of the 2015 Currie Cup, it will rank as a bigger upset than that caused at the World Cup in England, when Japan upset the Springboks in Brighton. The lions having finished as runners-up to Western Province in the 2014 tournament, have dominated the competition almost from the outset this year. The Blue Bulls were matching them win for win in the first half of the season, but were unable to maintain the form that saw the Lions finish the regular season with 10 wins from 10 games played.

The Golden Lions eventually finished eight points clear at the top of the table, and appeared to getting stronger as the campaign went on. 73 points in Bloem against Saturday's opponents in Round 8, and then 62 points against the reigning Champions in Johannesburg in Round 9, illustrating the point perfectly.

The Cheetahs in contrast to the form of their hosts, have qualified for the semi-final with just three wins to their credit, finishing a massive 11 points behind the third placed team, Western Province. Draws in their last two games of the season, against the Pumas and the Sharks allowed the Cheetahs to sneak the final play-off place by just two points from the Sharks. While the only win away from Bloem in 2015 came at the Griquas in Kimberley, opponents who finished rock bottom in the 2015 tournament.

Ellis Park will host probably the biggest game of the last weekend of the 2014 Currie Cup regular season, with second placed Golden Lions hosting fifth placed Free State Cheetahs. The Lions lost their chance of finishing top of the table last week, when they slipped up at the reigning champions, Natal Sharks, losing 23-26. They now require a win on Saturday in Johannesburg to clinch second position, and give them a home semi-final.

Although the Lions could still finish as runner-up to Western Province even if they lose, the Sharks are facing a second string Province side at Newlands, and the Lions must assume that their rivals will gain at least four points from their last fixture. The Cheetahs themselves are in a must win situation. They trail the Blue Bulls by two points in the race for the final qualifying position, so know that they must win to have any chance of overhauling the Bulls, who finish their campaign with a home game against the Griquas in Pretoria.

Free State Cheetahs coach Rory Duncan has been able to name three returning Springboks in the lineup for the game. Flanker Teboho "Oupa" Mohoje, lock Lood de Jager and prop Trevor Nyakane are all available to play as they are not on national contracts.
