Golden Lions                          Natal Sharks
Friday 30th September 15:00 GMT

The Lions and the Sharks open the final round of the regular season in the 2016 Currie Cup at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Friday. The fixture couldn't be of greater importance for the two sides involved, as the winners will secure a post-season play-off spot. Should the Golden Lions lose, then they will be eliminated from the tournament, ending their reign as Currie Cup Champions. They kept their hopes alive for one more week at least, with a thumping 71-7 victory at the winless Kings last weekend. The Lions first away win of the season. All three of their previous home matches in 2016 have ended in success, and they will hope that they can continue that run on Friday, which will give them a place in the knockout phase.

The Sharks currently in third place in the table, have had the benefit of a week's rest, their last game being in Round 7, when they demolished the Kings 53-0. Prior to that win, they had suffered back to back losses against Western province (WP) and the Cheetahs, results that are threatening their progress, after they started 2016 with four straight victories. If the Natal Sharks win and gain a bonus point on Friday, they will finish second in the table, and host a semi-final.

The Lions will be looking to make it seven wins out of seven on Saturday, when they face the Sharks at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, a side that they have already beaten during the 2015 tournament at Kings Park in Durban, during Round 3. Following their win in the clash of the two unbeaten teams last weekend, when they beat the Blue Bulls, in a game of two distinctly different halves, the Golden Lions hold a four point lead at the top of the ladder. The Lions already look assured of a top two finish, and home advantage in the play-off semi-finals, and in many people’s eyes, are the firm favourites to collect the title.

After successive wins against the Kings and the Pumas, the Natal Sharks were beaten by the reigning Champions, Western Province,  last weekend, and are holding on to the last play-off place by their finger nails. A point advantage over the Cheetahs and four point buffer on the Pumas. Although they would love to add to their points haul on Saturday, that would be a major surprise, and with the Bulls to play next week, the Sharks hopes may rest on their last two fixtures, when they face the Griquas and Cheetahs.

Courtesy of finishing second in the table at the end of the regular season, the Golden Lions won the right to entertain the reigning Currie Cup holders, the Natal Sharks, who finished third on the table, at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday. The Lions head coach, Johan Ackermann, has opted to stick with the starting XV that defeated the Cheetahs by a staggering 47-7 in the final round of regular season fixtures for the clash against the Sharks. Ackermann makes one change to the replacements bench, with Kwagga Smith replacing Jacques van Rooyen, who is omitted from the match day squad. Sharks, who defeated the Lions in Round 9 by 26-23, have brought Kyle Cooper back into the starting line up. Cooper who missed last week's 28-20 win against a below strength Western Province in Cape Town, with an ankle injury, comes in for Monde Hadebe in the front row.

Lionel Cronje is retained at flyhalf ahead of Fred Zeilinga, while ex-England prop Matt Stevens keeps his place in the front row ahead of Lourens Adriaanse. The Golden Lions who lost in the semi-final last season, are chasing their first title since 2011, while the holders from Natal will be looking to advance to the final to challenge for an eighth Currie Cup success.
