The Golden Lions play host to the Pumas in Johannesburg on Friday night in Round 2 of the 2015 Currie Cup. At least one other side will lose its 100% record in this seasons competition come the final whistle, with both teams having opened their campaign with victories.

The Lions were expected to take the points in Port Elizabeth against the Eastern Province Kings, but it was the manner of their victory that was impressive. A try-scoring bonus point was secured inside the first quarter, with two more tries added later on, to leave the final score in favour of the Lions by 51-14, with Kwagga Smith finishing with three tries to his name. Last season, the Lions were unbeaten at home. Winning all five regular season matches, including a 29-15 success against the Pumas, followed by a semi-final success against the Sharks, before going down away to Western Province by 16-19 in the final.

The Pumas recorded a fine 33-24 win against the Sharks in Round 1, holding off a second half comeback from their opponents. However, they have to prove that they can find more consistency than last season, when a win in Bloem against the Cheetahs was their only success on the road, and they were the only side to lose to the EP Kings.

At Ellis Park in Johannesburg is becoming a fortress once more for the Golden Lions who emerged victorious from a thrilling encounter last weekend against the previously unbeaten Western Province. A third victory from three home fixtures in the 2014 Currie Cup, saw the Lions climb into second place on the table, as the battle for the all important top four end of regular season spots hots up. On Friday, the Lions will once more find themselves put to a severe test, as they host third placed Pumas, who trail their hosts by just one point.

The Pumas will certainly need to raise their game and improve their discipline, as they slipped to defeat last weekend against the lowly Griquas. Although they outscored their opponents by two tries to one, they presented Gouws Prinsloo the chance to kick eight penalties. Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has made just one change to the side that unseated Western Province and that has been forced on him by injury to MB Lusaseni, who is replaced at lock by Martin Muller.

Derick Minnie returns from injury to provide cover on the replacements bench, although Malcolm Marx will face a fitness test before taking his place on the bench alongside him.
