Friday Nights game in Round 6 of the 2016 Currie Cup, between the Golden Lions and the Western Province, at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, is vital to the play-off hopes of both sides. The Lions who were untouchable last season, as they stormed to the title, have had a difficult campaign in the defence of their crown. Emphatic 60 point wins at home against the Pumas and Cavaliers, have been countered by losses on the road against the Griquas and the Bulls. Defeat last week at the Bulls has left the Champions with 12 points from their four games, and sitting in fifth position in the table, two points adrift of the Griquas.
With two of their last three games being against the current top two in the standings, the Cheetahs and the Sharks, anything other than a win on Friday, will leave their play-off aspirations hanging by the thinnest of threads. Western Province have managed to drag themselves back into the hunt for a top four finish, thanks to successive victories, against the lowly Kings ad last week by 34-27 at Newlands against the Sharks. A first defeat of the season for the table topping Sharks. Like the Lions, Province have 12 points from four matches, but have an inferior points difference.

The 2015 Currie Cup final takes place this Saturday in Johannesburg, when the reigning Champions, Western Province (WP), arrive to play the seasons all conquering Golden Lions. It has been a campaign of unbroken success for the Lions, who went through the 10 regular season fixtures without a blemish, winning all 10 matches, before they defeated the Cheetahs in last weekend's semi-final, to book their place in the Grand Final, as they seek to go one better than last season's runner-up position. The Lions surprisingly struggled to subdue the Cheetahs in the semi-final, only exerting their superiority during the closing stages, when the visitors had two men in the sin bin. The final winning margin of 10 points was completely unexpected, as the Lions had posted 73 points against the same opponents in Round 8 of the regular season. Saturday is a rematch of the 2014 final, when WP were the hosts in Cape Town, and the Golden Lions missed a last gasp penalty, which would have given them the Cup.
WP will have been buoyed by last weekend's victory at the Bulls, where they had lost in Round 4, and will hope that they can reverse another away defeat to retain their title, having been dismantled 32-62 in Johannesburg in Round 9. Last time WP played away in the Grand Final, in 2012, they beat the Sharks in Durban.

The penultimate round of the 2015 Currie Cup regular season, opens with a potentially titanic clash between the unbeaten Golden Lions and the reigning title holders, Western Province, at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.Having dominated the tournament from Week 1, when they won away to the Eastern Province Kings by 51-14, the Lions are just two points away from securing the vital top spot on the table, and the play-off home advantage that rewards that elevated position. The two teams last met in the final of last season's tournament, when Western Province edged a thrilling final in their own stadium by 19-16. That match came after they clashed twice during the regular season, when they each won in front of their own fans.Whatever the outcome of Friday's clash, the two sides will definitely occupy two of the top three position, but will not go head to head in the semi-finals, as they did in 2013, when Western Province were once more victorious by 33-16.
While the Lions have scored 39 tries in their eight fixtures, it is the Westerns who have the best defence in the tournament, having conceded 17 tries in their eight matches. Undoubtedly, the Lions will want to get the two points they need to ensure top spot this week if they possibly can, which would allow them to rest key players in Week 10, when they are due to face the Griquas in Johannesburg.

Saturday will see the Golden Lions become the next side to try and lower the colors of table topping Western Province who lead the table at the halfway stage of the regular season with five win from five games. They will be hoping for a bumper Ellis Park Stadium crowd, to help roar them on to what they hope will be a significant victory in the 2014 tournament. The Lions are currently in third place, but only have a three point cushion over the fifth place Cheetahs, and a loss on Saturday could give their hopes on making the play-offs a big, if not terminal blow. Last week, the Lions slipped to a surprise loss to the Blue Bulls, who had only won a single game previously, with Lions' coach Johan Ackermann putting a lot of the blame on the match officials for the 36-26 loss. Criticizing their handling of the scrimmage, where his side held the upper hand.
Western Province had a much more straight forward task, as they scored seven tries in their easy 49-14 hammering of bottom team Eastern Province Kings. Saturday's protagonists have already met once in the season's Currie Cup, with Western Province winning in Cape Town by 27-14.
