Saturdays match in Durban between the Sharks and reigning Champions Western Province, is vital to the chances of both sides of making it through to the post-season play-offs. Both teams have managed to win three of their first five matches, with Western Province holding a slight advantage, as they have secured two additional bonus points to the Sharks. Their records leaving them in third and fourth position on the ladder at the halfway stage of the regular season.
The Natal Sharks were pushed all the way in Round 5 in Durban, as they avenged an earlier defeat by the Pumas, by the narrowest of margins 27-26. A victory which goes with their other two wins this campaign, both against the winless Eastern Province Kings. With matches against the Lions and Blue Bulls to follow Saturday's clash, should the Sharks lose on Saturday, it is difficult to see any way back for them, as far as the play-offs go.
The Champions are seemingly in almost precarious a position, with two of their three wins coming against the Griquas, who are at the foot of the table, the only side below the Kings. They too have still to face the Bulls, to whom they lost 29-27 in Round 3, and the Lions, before the end of the season. With these teams struggling to make the top four, it is easy to forget that they have won the last two titles. Indeed, they met one another in the 2013 final, that the Sharks surprisingly won in the Western Province backyard by 33-19.
