Western Province                          Blue Bulls
Friday 18th September 17:00 GMT

Defending Currie Cup Champions, Western Province will look to close the gap on second placed Blue Bulls on Friday, when the two sides meet at Newlands. With the top two sides in the table at the end of the season guaranteed a home match in the semi-final, Friday's contest carries massive importance for both teams. The Bulls currently hold a five point advantage over Western who are in third place, and if they can repeat their victory in Round 3 at Loftus Versfeld, they will almost certainly end the challenge of the Champions for a top two spot.

The Champions are yet to convince anyone except their own supporters, that they are true title challengers again this season. Two of their four wins have come against bottom of the table Griquas. They did however, produce probably their best performance of the campaign last week, when they overcame the Sharks in Durban by 37-27.

The Bulls tasted defeat for the first time in 2015 last weekend, when they were beaten at home by the other unbeaten side in the tournament, the Lions. However, they have been impressive through the season to date, rattling up big scores and margins of victory wherever they have appeared. Western Province are not half the side that beat the Bulls three times during 2014, on their way to the title. and it would be no surprise if the Bulls completed a season's double over their rivals.

The two most successful sides in Currie Cup history will meet at Newlands on Saturday in the semi-final of the 2014 Currie Cup. Western Province have 32 Cup titles to their credit, the last of which came in 2012, while their visitors, the Blue Bulls, have 23 titles under their own belt, although the last time they lifted the silverware was in 2009.

The two teams have already met twice this season during the regular season, with Western Province winning both games, 41-17 at Newlands, the venue for Saturday's semi-final, and 23-18 at Loftus Versfeld. WP were bitterly disappointed in the 2013 Cup when after finishing at the top of the table, and beating the Lions in the semi-final, they then lost to the Natal Sharks in the final. A win against the Blue Bulls, will again guarantee them a home match in the final, while if the Bulls upset the odds and advance to the final, fourth place in the final table will ensure that they play away in the final, whoever wins the other semi-final match.

After resting most of his first choice side last week, Western Province coach Allister Coetzee brings big guns against the Blue Bulls, with only flanker Rynhardt Elstadt and inside centre Michael van der Spuy surviving from last week's run on XV. The Bulls have named Handre Pollard starting at centre, replacing the injured Burger Odendaal, while Rudy Paige will start at scrum half, with Piet van Zyl playing off the bench.
