There is never an easy trip to Kimberley, whatever the form of the Griquas. However, last weekend, saw the reigning Currie Cup Champions, Western Province (WP), record a stunning six try 43-19 success, to get their defence of the trophy off to the best possible start. On Saturday they return to their Newlands home to take on the Cheetahs.

In 2014 Western Province won their first four regular season fixtures in Cape Town, before a weakened side was fielded in their final game against the Sharks, when top spot in the table was already guaranteed, resulting in defeat. However, the Bulls were despatched at Newlands in the semi-final, as were the Lions in the final itself.

The Free State Cheetahs had a woeful campaign in 2014, managing just three wins, two of which were on the road, but came against the Griquas and the Kings, who filled the bottom two spots in the table at the end of the season. The new season started no better, as they slipped up at home against the Blue Bulls in Bloem, being crushed by 19-57. The last four fixtures between the sides have all gone the way of WP, but none have been by a margin of more than seven points. They met just once in 2014, when WP won by 34-29 in Bloem.
