The 2014 Currie Cup reaches its climax at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, when Western Province host the Golden Lions from Johannesburg. Although not always the case, the final in 2014 has pitted the two teams who finshed the regular season occupying the top two positions in the Currie Cup table.

Over the course of the season, the sides have already met twice, with the score poised at one win each. In Round 3, Western Province won at Newlands by 27-14, and outscored their visitors by 3 tries to 1. The Lions gained their revenge in Round 6 at Ellis Park, when they shaded a classic encounter by 35-33, despite scoring 5 tries to the 3 by Western Province. This was the first defeat of the campaign for the visitors.

In last week's semi finals, the Lions scored six tries as they coasted past the holders, Natal Sharks, by 50-20. Western Province were run much closer in cape Town, by the Blue Bulls who went down 23-31. Although a last minute converted try by the Bulls did make the final outcome closer than looked likely. Home advantage may just give Western Province the edge, but a close third encounter between the sides seems to be in store.

The only two sides that have registered the maximum 10 points from the first two rounds of this seasons Currie Cup tournament come face to face at Newlands Stadium Cape Town on Saturday, when Western Province welcome the Golden Lions. Golden Lions head the table at this early stage, merely on point’s difference from Saturday's host. But perhaps more impressive is the fact that the Lions have scored 13 tries in their first two fixtures, while WP have themselves registered 10 tries.

Last weekend the Lions crushed the EP Kings by 60-19, scoring nine tries, though they might be a little more concerned at having given up three scores, and they will need to tighten up their defense at Newlands. All this was accomplished without first choice fly half Marnitz Boshoff who will be out for some time with injury. They look like they may have a golden replacement in Jaco van der Walt.

At Newlands they will have to do without their skipper Warren Whiteley, who has been called up by the Springboks for the trip to Salta for the return match against Argentina in the Castle Rugby Championship. Western Province Currie Cup coach Allister Coetzee has named an unchanged line-up for the match.
