The Griquas, who have had to come through the qualifying tournament for the past two seasons to take a place in the Premier Division, are once more at the bottom of the pile, and it was only last weekend that they secured their first point of the season, for scoring four tries against the Bulls in Kimberley. Even then the final score was 32-46.

The only occasion that the two teams have met at Newlands in the last four years, the home side won a comfortable 36-12 victory, and given that they have already put the Griquas away by 43-19 in Kimberley in Round 1 of this seasons tournament, a similar result on Saturday would be no great surprise. With the Cheetahs, Sharks and Pumas all having won two of their four fixtures, the same as the Champions, completing the double over the bottom side is vital to their chances of qualifying to defend their title through the play-offs.

After losing their unbeaten record last week in a thrilling and pulsating match at Ellis Park against the Golden Lions Western Province will be keener than ever to secure the points on Saturday when they welcome the Griquas to Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Out scored by 5 tries to 3 by the Lions, the boot of Kurt Coleman had kept the unbeaten table leaders in the hunt, before they ultimately came up just short, going down by 35-33.

They still retain a four point advantage over the Lions with just four regular season fixtures left, as they chase the all important top place in the table, which will guarantee home advantage through the post-season play-offs. The Griquas produced a shock win last week, only their second of the season, when they upset high flying Pumas in Kimberley by 31-27, despite being outscored by 2 tries to 1. The ill-disciplined Pumas kept giving penalties away, and Gouws Prinsloo kept kicking them. He finished with eight penalties from eight attempts, and added a conversion for good measure.

While it seems unlikely that the Griquas can make the play-offs, the win against the Pumas has at least retained some hope in the camp, as they trail fourth positioned Sharks by five points.
