Round 7 of the 2016 Currie Cup comes to a close on Saturday, when Western Province (WP) play the Pumas at Newlands in Cape Town. The home side are desperate for a victory to keep them in touch with the top four teams in the tournament, and to retain hopes of a post-season play-off spot. For the Pumas, they have little left to play for, apart from trying to avoid the Wooden Spoon, which currently looks to be heading the way of the Eastern Province Kings. After last weekend's 32-58 defeat to the Lions in Johannesburg, WP find themselves six points adrift of the fourth placed Griquas, who they still have to visit before the end of the regular season.
The Pumas are still waiting for a first win of the season, after five successive defeats, in which they have conceded an average of more than 40 points per game. They have however, managed to secure five bonus points during the course of the season, which is enough to keep them ahead of the Kings, who are also winless and have managed just a solitary bonus point to date. They face the Kings in the final round of the regular season, the result of which looks almost certain to decide who will finish at the bottom of the 2016 ladder.

Reigning Currie Cup Champions, Western Province (WP), will host the Pumas on Saturday atNewlands, looking to secure the bonus point victory, that will keep them in the hunt for a top two finish on the regular season ladder, and a home semifinal in the playoffs. After a hiccup in Rounds two and three, when they were beaten on the road by both the Blue Bullsand the Cheetahs, WP have now completed three wins on the trot, including a reversal of the earlier defeat to the Bulls. Winning last weekend at Newlands by 2914, and opening up the possibility of a top two finish. With a tricky trip to face the table topping Lions next week, WP know that at the very least they need to claim a victory on Saturday. They will have the advantage of knowing what their nearest rivals, the Bulls have done in round 8, as they visit the Sharks on Friday Evening.
After three successive losses, the Pumas returned to winning ways in Round 7, beating the Kings.A result that has just about kept them in the hunt for a top four place. However, their inability topick up bonus points this season, mean that they still trail the Cheetahs by four points. Any points they can secure on Saturday will be a massive bonus, as they prepare to host the Cheetahs next week in Round 9.
