European competition takes centre stage over the next fortnight around the major clubs of Europe, the first fixture of round 5, pitting two French Top 14 clubs, Bayonne and La Rochelle, against each other in the Challenge at the Stade Jean Dauger in Bayonne on Thursday Evening. Bayonne are currently at the foot of the Top 14 table, having struggled after winning promotion from the Pro D2 at the end of last season, winning just three of their 15 fixtures. The European Rugby Challenge Cup has offered no sort of respite for the strugglers either, as they sit at the bottom of Pool 1, with just a solitary losing bonus point to their credit, and their chances of progressing to the quarter-finals long gone.

La Rochelle top the pool, thanks to their better head to head record against Gloucester, with whom they are level on 15 points. Victory on Thursday would almost assure them of a place in the knockout stages, at the very least as one of the best pool runners-up. When the clubs played at La Rochelle in Round 2 back in October, the home side recorded a bonus point victory, one of three maximum returns they have registered in four Challenge Cup outings this season.

Bayonne and La Rochelle of France’s Top 14 tournament met at the Stade Jean Dauger on Saturday in Pool 2 of the Challenge Cup, with nothing more than pride at stake, as both sides are already certain of elimination, after their poor results in the opening four rounds of fixtures, that has seen the French clubs record just a single victory each. With both sides struggling to escape the relegation zone at the bottom of the Top 14 table, Bayonne have clawed their way up to 10th place, but are just four points clear of the danger zone, while La Rochelle are currently rock bottom, it is more than likely that Saturday’s contest will see two weaken selections opposing each other. When the sides met earlier in the tournament, La Rochelle ran out winners by 25-13, after which they faced Exeter Chiefs in the double header, and were soundly beaten in both fixtures.

While La Rochelle have won three of their last European Rugby Challenge Cup matches against other French clubs, the defeat coming against Clermont in the quarter final of 2011, they have not managed a win in any competition since they beat Grenoble 19-15 at the end of December. Despite their poor results in this season’s competition, La Rochelle’s Loan Goujon has made 317 metres. The most of any player in the tournament, while Bayonne’s Saimon Vaka has carried the ball 11 times, for a top average of 19.1 metres per carry.
