London Irish put their dreadful start to the Aviva Premiership behind them last week, when they began their Challenge Cup campaign, with an emphatic win in Reading against Top 14 club Agen. On Saturday they travel to the Alps to face more French opposition, in the guise of Grenoble in Round 2.

The Exiles thrashed Agen, who are at the foot of the Top 14 table by 48-10 at the Madejski Stadium, picking up a bonus point for posting eight tries in doing so. Grenoble meanwhile, travelled to face last season's European Rugby Challenge Cup runners-up Edinburgh, and were beaten by 10-28. The two clubs have met twice previously in the Challenge Cup, with Irish coming out on top on both occasions, although both games were close run things, the result in the Alps going their way by 25-15 in October 2014.

For a side that is rarely beaten at the Stade des Alpes, it is quite an astonishing fact that Grenoble have never yet defeated an English club at the venue. They have played a total of 14 matches against Premiership opposition, with just two wins to their credit, both of which were on English soil. London Irish have an outstanding record against Top 14 opposition, having won 16 of their last 18 fixtures against clubs from across the English Channel.

Two clubs who had vastly differing experiences in Round 1 of this season's Challenge Cup, last weekend, meet at the Stade Lesdiguieres, Grenoble on Friday, when London Irish venture into the Alps to face Top 14 play-off hopefuls Grenoble. London Irish began their Pool 1 campaign with a fixture against the amateurs of Rovigo from Italy, who found themselves as expected completely outclassed, and run off of their feet.

Ten tries, all of which were converted by Myles Dorrian, who also scored a try for a personal tally of 25 points, meant a final score of 70-14 in favour of the Exiles. Grenoble meanwhile, continued their miserably form whenever they step outside their Alpine fortress, and were soundly beaten at the Arms Park by Cardiff Blues, who crossed the French side's line five times, for a try-scoring bonus point victory.

With back to back fixtures to follow against the Blues, the Exiles will be anxious to keep pace with their Welsh rivals, who should beat Rovigo in Italy at the weekend. While Grenoble's home form suggests that life will be tough on Friday for the Premiership side, such is their poor form away from home, that the French club may well have already given up hope of qualifying for the quarter finals, and concentrate on domestic matters.
