Castres play their final Pool 4 qualifying fixture on Friday Evening at the Stade Pierre Antoine in Castres against the Irish Province Leinster. The French Top 14 club have won their two previous home games in the pool, against the Northampton Saints and fellow French side Montpellier, but their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages have disappeared in a series of below performances on the road. Last season's Challenge Cup winners, have been beaten in all three away games in the pool, most recently last weekend 21-28 at the Saints. That result has left them in third position with 10 points. The maximum total they can now achieve is 15, and that will not be enough to secure a best runners-up position.

Leinster are already assured of winning the pool, following their stunning victory over Montpellier in Dublin last weekend, when they overwhelmed their nearest challengers by 57-3. The Irishmen will be looking to finish the qualifiers on a high with a fifth win in the pool, which will assure them of a quarter-final on home soil in Dublin. Given that the Leinstermen have scored 150 points in their three home fixtures, a quarter-final in Dublin will provide them with a massive advantage, as they chase a fourth European title.

Castres from the Top 14 in France have been something of an enigma this season. Having appeared in the last two finals of the domestic tournament against Toulon, and winning in 2013, this season they find themselves in 13th position in the table. Domestically their position has been entirely justified by the performances that they have given, and with the poorest away from in the league they will do well to get out of the relegation zone come the final reckoning.

Yet last week at the Stoop, in the opening round of the European Rugby Champions Cup, they produced a highly competitive performance against Harlequins, and the 9-25 final scoreline was flattering in the extreme to Quins, who had been outplayed for the first 40 minutes. This Leinster Sunday, the French club return to the familiar surroundings of the Stade Pierre Antoine, Castres for their next Pool 2 fixture, where they will face three times European Champions Leinster. The Irishmen had to battle hard overcome Premiership club Wasps in the opening match at the RDS, eventually squeezing home by 25-20, in wet and windy conditions that did little to help either side produce fluent passages of play.
