Saturday 15th October 14:15 GMT

After a season missing from the top tier of European Competition, French Top 14 side Castres, return to the European Rugby Champions Cup on Saturday, when they travel to Dublin to face Leinster at the RDS. The French club will be looking for their first win in the tournament since Round 3 back in 2013. They suffered a Pool stage whitewash in 2014/15, which included two defeats to Leinster, the final score in the Dublin fixture being 8-50. Unlike Castres, the Irish Province may have been playing in the Champions Cup last season, but they suffered a terrible campaign, in which they recorded just a single win in six outings, in a Pool that contained Bath, Toulon and Wasps.

Leinster are enjoying a successful start to the Guinness PRO12 tournament, with five wins out of six, including a win against their greatest rivals Munster at the Aviva Stadium, which lifted them level on points at the top of the table with fellow Irish Province Ulster. In contrast, Castres are sitting in a lowly 11th position in the Top 14 table, with three wins and a draw to set alongside four defeats. Castres have made nine previous trips to the Emerald Isle, including three to Dublin to take on Leinster, and have yet to enjoy the taste of victory. The Irish side have won 19 of the last 21 fixtures that they have played against Top 14 opponents in Dublin, one of those two defeats came last season against Toulon.

The three time European Champions Leinster, who entertain Castres from France on Saturday at the RDS, are embroiled in a three way battle for qualification to the knockout stage of this season tournament from Pool 2. They are currently level on points at the top of the Pool with Harlequins on 13 points, who host Wasps at the Stoop on Saturday evening. Wasps who have now relocated to Coventry from their previous base in Wycombe, are just a point adrift of the Pool leaders, due to their collection of bonus points, and with Leinster due to visit them next weekend, still retain high hopes of making the last eight.

Bottom of the Pool Castres, have managed just one point so far, during what has been a troubled season both at home and in Europe, and their minds are sure to be firmly on the challenge of getting further away from the Top 14 relegation zone, rather than what for them is a “dead rubber” in the European Rugby Champions Cup. The two sides have played five times previously, with Leinster winning on four occasions, including the last three fixtures. The Irish Province will also be defending a home record against French Clubs that has seen them lose just one of the last 19 fixtures they have played against teams from the Top 14 in the Champions Cup.
