Pool 5 in this seasons European Rugby Champions Cup certainly looks like the most competitive of the five, and will be the most challenging to qualify from for the knockout stages. Leinster and Wasps open their campaign when they go head to head at the RDS on Sunday.

Leinster were not at their best last season, either in the PRO12 or the Champions Cup, but still came perilously close to making it through to the final. After sneaking through a Pool that contained London Wasps, they won an undeserved victory in the last eight against Bath, before coming up against the defending Champions, Toulon. The Irish Province pushed the Champions all the way, before going down by 20-25 after extra-time. The two sides have met four times previously at the Pool stages, with the three times European Champions, Leinster having a slight edge, winning two and drawing of the fixtures. Wasps however, were successful on the only occasion that the teams met in the knockout phase of the tournament.

With Bath and Toulon the other two sides in Pool 5, qualification may come down to which of the competing sides can secure an away victory. The RDS is a real fortress for Leinster in all tournaments, and Wasps who have won just one of the last five games they have played against Irish opposition, will do well to emerge from Dublin with as much as a losing bonus point.

Reigning Guinness PRO12 Champions, Leinster, open their new European Rugby Champions Cup challenge with a Pool 2 home fixture at the RDS on Sunday, against Wasps from the English Aviva Premiership. The visitors have twice been champions of Europe, although the last occasion was back in 2006-07, when they won an all English affair against the Leicester Tigers at Twickenham.

Leinster have an even more impressive European record, having secured three titles. Those three successes came in the space of just four seasons, the last one being in 2011-12 against Ulster in front of a record crowd at Twickenham. The Irish Province qualified for the Champions Cup by winning a second successive PRO12 title, whereas London Wasps after finishing seventh in the Premiership, had to beat Stade Francais in a two-leg play-off.

With Harlequins and Castres making up the rest of the Pool, it is essential for any team hoping to make it to the last eight to win their home games at the least, and it is difficult to see Wasps unseating Leinster on Sunday. The two sides have met three times previously in European competition, with the English club holding a slight advantage having won two and lost one of those contests.
