There is something about the European Rugby Champions Cup that brings out the best and the most doggedness in the red machine of Munster, and that was no better illustrated than their come from behind victory against the Sale Sharks in Round 1 of the Pool 1 fixtures. The Sharks led 23-7 at half time at the AJ Bell Stadium, and looked as if they were about to strike a mighty blow to the Irishmen's chances of progressing from what is likely to be a highly competitive group, with the giants of the Aviva Premiership, Saracens, and the Top 14, Clermont Auvergne making up the other two sides.
With the aid of the wind, Munster dominated the second half, and whittled away at Sale's lead, until with time up on the clock, Ian Keatley planted a 40 metre drop goal through the Sale Sharks posts to clinch a 27-26 victory. Thomond Park in Limerick will be a heaving cauldron on Friday night, when Saracens are the visitors in Round 2.
The Premiership side also started their campaign with a victory, overcoming Clermont at Allianz Park by 30-23, in what was an almighty contest between two clubs that had met at the semi-final stage last season, when Saracens had won by 40 points. Munster themselves have reached the semi-final in the past two seasons, but have to go back to 2007-08 for the last time that they made it through to the final, when they defeated Toulouse at the Millennium Stadium.
