Pool 3 in the Champions Cup looks as if it is a shootout between Racing 92 of the Top 14 and Northampton Saints of the Premiership, and the two clubs meet in back to back fixtures over the next two weeks, with the first clash taking place on Saturday at the Stade Yves Du Manoir. The Saints currently top the Pool after a home win against the Scarlets, was followed up by a stunning victory in Glasgow against the Warriors.

Racing's opening fixture against the Warriors was postponed after the Paris terrorists attacks, but they won what became their opening fixture, when they travelled to West Wales and defeated the Scarlets by 29-12. The clubs met at the Pool stage of last season's European Rugby Champions Cup, when Racing Metro won both encounters, 20-11 in Paris, and then in one of the performances of the tournament last season, they triumphed by 32-8 at Franklin's Gardens.

With World Player of the year and World Cup winner, Dan Carter, making his Champions Cup debut, the Paris outfit will be looking to make it seven wins from their last nine fixtures in the tournament. Their only defeat in that run, came against Premiership club Saracens in last season's quarter-final, when the Parisians were beaten 11-12 on home soil.

Although not being given the title of the "group of death", due to the presence of the Italians of Benetton Treviso, Pool 5 is potentially the strongest of all five Pools in this season's European Rugby Champions Cup. Racing Metro are currently in sixth position in the French Top 14 table, and on Saturday will host the reigning Aviva Premiership Champions from England, Northampton Saints, at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, Colombes. Saints are currently top of the Premiership table, with just one defeat from six fixtures.

The Pool also contains the Ospreys from the Guinness PRO12, who sit proudly at the top of that competition table, with a perfect 100% winning record in the current campaign from their six fixtures to date. Racing have played four matches at home this season and won all of them, while away from home they are a different proposition, where they have one just once, while losing four times already.

Racing faced a similar Pool last season, where they faced Clermont, Harlequins and the Scarlets. They failed on that occasion to reach the knockout stage, but played an important role in the outcome of the final Pool positions, and their results against the Ospreys and the Saints at Colombes, may well decide qualification once more.
