Friday 26th June 21:30 GMT

Argentina will meet the France Barbarians side for the second time in six days on Friday, when they face each other in the La Plata Rugby Club, La Plata in the final match of their short series. The home team who are using the series as a warm up for the forthcoming Rugby Championship and World Cup in England, fell to a surprise and disappointing defeat in the first fixture last weekend, when the Barbarians XV recorded a 28-22 victory in Rosario. For the invitation side this was a seventh successive victory, the last time they tasted defeat coming in June 2011 against Argentina by 19-23 in the Independiente Stadium, Avellaneda.

Although the Pumas dominated territory in the first period last weekend, they looked decidedly rusty, and there were far too many handling errors, for them to build up any real momentum. The visitors meanwhile, true to the traditions of Barbarians rugby ran the ball at every opportunity, and made the most of their limited opportunities, turning round 19-10 to the good.

Although the home side improved after the break, and scored two good tries to lead 22-19, their discipline let them down as both teams made a raft of changes, with the game losing much of its pattern and structure. Benjamin Urdapilleta took the opportunity to kick three penalties, to secure a fine victory for the scratch XV.

The two teams first met back in 1982 at the Stade Maurice Boyau, Dax, when the Pumas won by 22-8. There have been five more fixtures since then, with the Barbarians victorious on two occasions, and the Pumas winning the other three. No other side has faced the French Barbarians as often as the Argentina, although they last played each other in June 2011, when another two match series ended 1-1. The Barbarians series levelling win at Estadio Centenario, Resistencia, being their only win to date on Argentine soil.

The Barbarians have named a 27-man squad for the trip, that the Pumas are using as a warm up for the Rugby Championship, and are coached by Fabrice Landreau and Philippe Rouge-Thomas. As is traditional with the French Barbarians, the squad is made up of players who are either French or play for a French club. The squad is therefore, made up of 23 Frenchmen, two South African, one one player each from Argentina and the Ivory Coast.
