Although born in New Zealand, McIntosh won two caps for Wales, and is currently in charge of the Welsh Premiership side Pontypridd, who he will leave, in order to take up his new role with the PRO12 outfit.

43-year-old McIntosh will replace Rob Powell, the previous defense coach for the Cardiff Blues, and they are certainly in need of shoring up defensively. Their latest shattering defeat came at Exeter in round one of this season's Heineken Cup, when they conceded six tries, and were effectively out of the game well before half time.

Pontypridd with whom McIntosh has a 24 year association, have issued a statement to the effect that they knew that at some time they would lose their talented coach, who was inevitable going to be appointed to a senior post at regional level.

Toulon began the defense of their title, by overwhelming Glasgow Warriors in France, posting over 50 points, against a team riding high at the top of the PRO12 competition.

On the Heineken Cup this week, the Cardiff Blues and Toulon face off at Cardiff Arms Park at 12:45 local time and an hour earlier GMT, Sunday, the 21st of October. The Cardiff Blues are in third in pool number three, having played their first game of the season and lost, which gave them just one bonus point for their loss, and put them in third place. As for the fourth place spot, it is taken by the Montpellier rugby team who are in the same boat as Cardiff, having lost their first game. However, they didn't earn any points from it.
