The Reigning U20 World Champions, England Under 20s, open their 2015 campaign at the Stadio San Michele in Calvisano on Tuesday, against Japan, who only find themselves in the tournament thanks to their promotion in 2014 via the IRB Junior World Championship Trophy.

England have won the last two editions of the Championship, and have appeared in five of the seven finals that have been held prior to the 2015 tournament. While for Japan, they are making their first trip to the finals since 2009, which was their second appearance at the tournament. On both previous occasions that they have participated, Japan have finished in fifteenth place out of sixteen nations. France and Wales also make up Pool A, so England will be anxious to start their defence of the title with a try-scoring bonus-point win, and with an emphatic points difference in their favour.

However, Japan Under 20s have the benefit of having taken part in the recent Oceania U20's tournament, where they faced Australia, New Zealand and Samoa U20's. Although they finish in last position, the Japanese improved as the competition went on, after being humbled by over 70 points in their opening fixture against the Baby Blacks. They will provide stiffer opposition for the benefit of having played those competitive matches.
