Ireland and Scotland meet at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella, Viadana on Saturday, playing seventh and eighth places at the IRB Junior World Championship. For the Irish youngsters, the match will be the climax of a disappointing tournament, and indeed a disappointing season all-round. They stumbled through their opening two Pool C matches, defeating Argentina with a last gasp penalty, before claiming a win against the Scots by 24-20 with each team managing two tries each. That sent the Ireland Under 20s into a winner take all fixture against the Baby Blacks, for a place in the semi-finals. Although they trailed by only 3-8 at half-time, the Kiwis eased away after the break to win 3-25.

The Scotland Under 20s meanwhile, took a fearful battering to start the Pool, going down 10-68 to New Zealand. However, they came back well, losing to the Irish, and then beating the Argentinian side in a surprise result by 29-6. Unfortunately they came up an Australian side in their play-off semi-final, that was keen to make amends for their performance in the final Pool match against South Africa, when they were crushed 13-46, and missed out on a semi-final spot as a consequence.

The young Australians ran out 31-21 winners, with only two late tries by the Scots making the margin as close as it was. The Irish trailed Wales 0-22 at half time in their play-off, before improving after the break, to reduce the final arrears to 12-22.

Stadio San Michele in Calvisano will host the second match in Pool C of the 2015 U20s World Championship for the two 6-Nations rivals, Ireland Under 20s and Scotland. Ireland, arrived for the Championships on the back of a bitterly disappointing 6-Nations campaign, where they won only two of their five fixtures, and finished in fifth place, with only the winless Italians beneath them. However, they opened their challenge for the global title with a hard fought win over the young Pumas from Argentina.

That victory, which came courtesy of a last minute penalty goal by Quinlan, which gave the Irish an 18-16 win, sets the Irish team up as the New Zealanders biggest rivals for top spot in the Pool. However, a side that went tryless against the Argentinians, will have to up their game considerably, if they are to have a realistic chance of making the semi-finals. The Scots had the audacity to lead New Zealand by 10-3 after a quarter of an hour.

However, from there on in in was pretty much one way traffic, with the Junior Blacks eventually defeating the Scots 10-68. The Scotland Under 20s will hope to draw confidence for the Irish game, from their 17-10 win when the two sides met in the 2015 6-Nations at Netherdale.
