It will quite a surprise if the Baby Blacks do not complete their qualification for the semi-finals on Wednesday at the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella, Viadana, when they meet Ireland Under 20s in their final Pool C qualifying fixture. Although the Irish have, like the Baby Blacks, a 100% winning record from their opening two fixtures, against Scotland and Argentina, they have been far less convincing than their southern hemisphere rivals, in securing those victories.

After a tough first 15 minutes against the Scots, the New Zealand Under 20s youngsters dominated the match, and eventually ran out winners by 68-10, while the Irish scraped past the same opponents by just 24-20 in Round 2. Against Los Pumitas, the Irish needed a last gasp penalty goal, to sneak the match by 18-16. The irish failed to cross their opponents line, while the Argentines did manage one try. New Zealand also required a late penalty (three minutes from time) to secure their own 32-29 win against the unlucky South Americans. The Baby Blacks did however, record a try-scoring bonus point as well as the four points for the win.

Trailing the Baby Blacks by two points, nothing but a win for the Irish will suffice if they want to get through to the semi-finals. Although it seems much more likely that they will be playing off for fifth to eighth position.
