South Africa who came so close to the title last year, open their Junior World Cup title challenge at the Stadio San Michele in Calvisano on Tuesday against the host nation Italy. The Junior Boks have only ever once failed to make it as far as the semi-finals in the IRB Junior World Championship, and by coincidence that was in 2011, when the tournament was previously held in Italy. On that occasion that had to settle for a fifth position finish. The hosts have never managed to finish higher than eleventh, which they have done on three occasion, including the 2011 tournament.

The Italy Under 20s did manage to record two wins in 2014, against Argentina in the Pool stages, and in the play-off against Fiji for the eleventh place. South Africa Under 20s, who despite their outstanding record of qualifying from the Pool stages, have only actually them made it through to the final on two of those occasions. In 2012 on home soil, they won their one and only title, beating the New Zealand U20's by 22-16.
