An important, if not vital, all Premiership Division ITM Cup clash takes place on Sunday at Eden Park, when the Auckland Gulls take on the Waikato Mooloos. Auckland, who were beaten in last season's Grand Final, have recovered from a record loss in Round 1, when they were thrashed by their great rivals Canterbury in Christchurch 3-43, to win three straight victories. However, those three wins have all come against struggling sides. Northland and Southland who were beaten by 37-15 and 51-16 respectively, occupy the bottom two positions in the Championship Division, and are both winless. Earlier in the week, the Gulls squeezed past Hawke's Bay, another winless outfit, who are at the foot of the Premiership table.

While Auckland are in third position with 14 points from four fixtures, the Mooloos are just outside the play-off places, lying fifth with 10 points from three matches. Waikato lost their opening game at Tasman by 19-24, but have since won two cross-over matches, against North Harbour 26-15 and Manawatu 19-10. Neither side has been terribly convincing in 2016, but both are pushing for a play-off place. Although even if they should ultimately qualify for the knockout phase, it is difficult to see them being able to mount a serious challenge to the rampant Canterbury XV.

Auckland will at least the advantage of playing at their Eden Park home venue, when they entertain Waikato in the ITM Cup on Thursday, in what is a vital game for both teams. The two sides are currently in fourth and fifth positions in the premiership, and although Counties Manukau are not entirely out of the play-off picture, it would appear that the fourth and final semi-final position will come from Thursday's protagonists. A win for Auckland at Eden Park would eliminate the visitors from the race for the play-offs, and would leave Conties to win at least two of their remaining three fixture to have any chance of overhauling Auckland. If the visitors, who are four points behind their hosts, and having played a game more, can secure a win, they will at least give themselves a chance to qualify. Especially given that their last game of the regular season is at home in Hamilton, against the championships bottom team, the Bay of Plenty.

Both sides missed opportunities last week, as Waikato slipped up at home, all be it narrowly 20-22, against the championship leaders Manawatu. While Auckland losing at Taranaki was perhaps a little more predictable. These results allowed Counties who thumped Wellington by 50 points to close the gap, and keep their slim hopes alive.
