Two sides who knew the disappointment of semi-final defeat in the 2015 Provincial tournament, the Bay of Plenty (Steamers) and Taranaki (Bulls), will face each other in a cross division fixture in Week 1 of the 2016 ITM Cup, at the Bay Park Stadium in Mount Maunganui. With a number of All Black 7's players in their squad, it is likely that Bay, who finished fourth in the Championship Division in 2015 before losing to Hawke's Bay in the semi-finals, will play an expansive game in 2016, looking to attack opponents from all parts of the field. Such an approach promises to make the Steamers an exciting outfit to watch, and also potential title challengers.

However, if the All Blacks call on the flanker Sam Crane and Hooker Nathan Harris for the Rugby Championship, the Steamers may lack the experience to keep on track during the early weeks of the tournament. Champions in 2014, the Bulls were beaten by Canterbury in the last four in 2015, and have a back line that could send them close to the title again in the coming campaign, although they will have to make do without the influential All Blacks Beauden Barrett, Waisake Naholo during the period of the Rugby Championship.

Bay of Plenty Steamers look set to make the ITM Cup Championship play-offs at the end of the season, as the third best side in the division. While they are short of the class of the leaders Hawke's Bay and Wellington, they appear a cut above the other four sides. On Saturday, they face a tough task at the Rotorua International Stadium, when they take on the reigning Champions, Taranaki Bulls, in a crossover match. If the match had taken place a couple of weeks ago, the Steamers may have felt confident in front of their own fans of taking the points, but in Week 4 the Bulls have found their mojo, and successive victories against Counties and Northland, have lifted them into fourth position in the table.

When the sides met in New Plymouth last season, the Bulls hammered their visitors by 41-3, on their way to topping the regular season ladder. The last time that Bay of Plenty held the bragging rights between the teams was way back in 2006, when they defeated the Bulls in Mount Maunganui by 20-16. The Steamers have won two of their three home games, but were beaten the last time they played on home soil, thrashed by Waikato, who cruised home by 43-10.

This week in the ITM Cup, Bay of Plenty takes on Taranaki at 14:35 local time and 02:35 GMT. The ITM Cup will see three matches this weekend including this one between Bay Of Plenty of Taranaki. Otago and Northland face off as well as North Harbour and Waikato. In the standings, these two teams are in the Premiership Division, Bay of Plenty in fourth place with no games played as of yet. Turning to Taranaki, we see that they are just by chance right below them, because they also haven't been able to play a game yet.

In the Championship Division, Tasman leads right now, followed by Northland and then North Harbour, but none of those teams have played either, because it is the beginning of the season for this competition.
