The Counties Manukau Steelers coach Darryl Suasua, has responded to the 17-20 defeat to North Harbour, by making seven changes to the starting XV on Sunday. One of them enforced, as flanker Fotu Lokotui broke his leg in last weekend's lost in Albany. His place will be taken by Jordan Taufua, who although not a regular in the No. 7 shirt, has worn it in the past under Tana Umaga. The Steamers have also made a number of changes, after falling 22-30 to Taranaki in their opening fixture. They left themselves with far too much to do in Round 1, when they allowed Taranaki to open up a 0-21 lead. Although they were stirred to a tremendous comeback in front of their own fans, they came up short, as fullback Marty McKenzie's boot punished them repeatedly, as he ended with three conversions and three penalties to his credit.

The Counties Manukau Steelers host the Bay of Plenty Steamers at the ECOLight Stadium on Sunday, in an ITM Cup Crossover match, in a game that is vital to the Premiership side, both to keep them clear of the relegation position, currently occupied by manawatu, but also to keep in touch with the teams above them, who are vying for the play-off positions. Counties were extremely sloppy when they went down to Championship high flyers Hawke's Bay in Week 3, the final score in Pukekohe being 11-35. An improved display earlier in Week 4 away to Taranaki, still ended in defeat, although the 10-17 final scoreline did at least provide a consolation losing bonus point.

The Steamers have won two of their four games this season, but have yet to secure a bonus point of any description and sit in third position in the Championship table. However, they are already some way behind the leaders, Hawke's Bay and Wellington. They began week 3 with a good win over Southland, but the gulf in class between themselves and a struggling Premiership side, the Waikato Mooloos, was clear for all to see, as the Steamers went down on home soil by 10-43.
