After producing the shock result of the season, when they defeated reigning ITM Cup Canterbury 19-13 in Round 5, the Manawatu Turbos were unable to follow up with another Premiership scalp, as they slipped to a 19-30 defeat to Taranaki in New Plymouth last week. That result leaves them in third position in the Championship table, but with only a three point buffer over fifth placed Bay of Plenty, although they do have a game in hand. On Saturday the Turbos will host the Hawke's Bay Magpies at the FMG Stadium in Palmerston North.

The Magpies looked doomed to a rapid return to the Championship Division, as they sit firmly at the foot of the top flight, with 10 points from seven matches, which leaves them eight points from safety. The Hawkes Bay Magpies sole victory in 2016 came in Round 5, when they travelled to Invercargill and defeated the Southland Stags, who at the time were winless, by 43-29. If they can secure a second win of the season on Saturday, with a trip to Hamilton to come in Round 8, where they will face the struggling Waikato side, the Magpies will still cling to a faint hope that they can get out of their perilous position.

The 2014 ITM Cup Championship final takes place on Friday evening in Palmerston North, between the two sides that finished at the top of the regular season table, Manawatu and the Ranfurly Shield holders, Hawkes Bay. When the two sides meet in Week 8 of the regular season, with top spot in the table at stake, Manawatu recorded a comfortable 29-3 victory over their visitors. However, Hawkes Bay went into that fixture between defences of the Shield that they so jealously guard.

Certainly Hawkes Bay's form after winning the Shield was something of a roller coaster, the team able to raise its game for defences of the trophy, while appearing flat and a little disinterested when playing a normal ITM Cup fixture. Neither side had things all their own way in the semi-finals. The Manawatu Turbos overcame a willing if somewhat limited Southland by 23-18 at the FMG Stadium in Palmerston. Despite holding a 23-6 lead with less than 30 minutes left to play, they found themselves facing an anxious last few minutes as they held on for victory. Hawkes Bay meanwhile, won a nervy contest against Northland 26-21 in Napier. Although outscored three tries to two, the home side were able to clinch a place in the final thanks to the boot of Ihaia West who landed 16 points.

The top two teams in the 2014 ITM Cup Championship will clash at the FMG Stadium on Sunday, when Manawatu welcome Ranfurly Shield holders and current table toppers, Hawkes Bay. Hawkes Bay successfully defend the Shield earlier in the week, beating the woeful premiership Wellington side, who remain winless this season, and who following the loss to the Bay, are now condemned to finishing bottom of the table, and playing the championship in 2015. Manawatu have kept the pressure on Hawkes Bay for the vial top spot in the table, by winning a thrilling encounter with Waikato last week 22-20. Although, if the home side had possessed a reliable kicker on the day, they would have won comfortably. While Waikato missed five kicks from ten attempts, Jade Te Rure and Otere Black nailed six from six penalties for the visitors.

A win for Hawkes Bay will secure top spot, and will give them home advantage through the promotion play-offs, while victory for Manawatu on Sunday would take them to the summit of the championship table with one week remaining of the regular season, but still leave them needing to better the Bay's result against Southland next week, when they themselves travel to Otago.
