Sunday 20th September 02:35 GMT

North Harbour have already had to face the unbeaten Premiership leaders, the Tasman Makos, in a crossover match this week, going down by 20-39 in Nelson, and now they have to face second in the table, and also unbeaten Canterbury Lambs on Sunday at the QBE Stadium in Albany. That win by Tasman has widened the gap between themselves and Canterbury to six points, although the Lambs do have a game in hand. The rivals meeting in Nelson in Round 8, in what appears likely to be the match to decide who finishes at the top of the regular season ladder.

Although North Harbour have had a disappointing 2015, winning just two of their six games to date, they are still clinging to the coat tails of the sides in third and fourth position in the Championship table, Bay of Plenty and Otago. The Razorbacks having jumped over them, following their stunning 47-36 win against the Wellington Lions on Thursday.

Many of Harbour’s issues this season have revolved around their leaky defence, where they have conceded 26 tries in their six games, the joint worse in the Championship. Sunday is probably not the time when that matter will be successfully addressed. The Lambs have crossed their opponents whitewash at an average of 4.5 times per match, an average that at worst will probably be maintained in Albany.

A win for Canterbury at the North Harbour Stadium in Albany on Wednesday will confirm them as the first side to secure a place in the Premiership semi-finals for 2014.

Although the reigning champions have been in imperious form since this season's tournament commenced, it is always a significant moment when qualification is secured, and the back room staff can start planning for the challenges still to come. It will be a major surprise if North Harbour make Canterbury wait a little longer for the precious victory. Despite having home advantage, Harbour sit rock bottom of the championship, and have won just one game all season.

The Canterbury coach Scott Robertson has made a number of changes to his team, following last Friday's tough win over Counties Manukau, with just one player starting in the same position as he did against Counties. Adam Whitelock remains at outside centre. The call up to the All Blacks for Tom Taylor has forced Robertson to move Richie Mo'unga back to No.10 and Johnny McNicholl to fill in at full-back. The table toppers have averaged over 40 points a game in 2014, and with Ryan Crotty returning from injury to wear the No. 12 shirt, they will expect to post at least their season's average.

North Harbour will have nothing but their pride at stake, when they face the mighty Canterbury in Albany at the weekend, in the final round of matches in this season's ITM Cup. A disc-appointing season sees North Harbour next to bottom of the Championship table, with only Northland below them, by a single point. North, having secured just a single victory from their nine games played this season. Canterbury on the other hand, will be looking for a victory that will ensure that they finish above their great rivals from the North Island, Auckland, and that should effectively secure them a home match in the Premiership play-offs.

They will also be looking for a positive result to help build the momentum as they look towards the knock out phase of the tournament. Both sides had interesting matches last week; with Canterbury having to work hard to overcome a spirited Counties side eventually by 38-23, though it was much tighter than the score suggests, while North Harbour showed Great Spirit before eventually succumbing to Otago by 23-37.
