The 2016 New Zealand Provincial Championship gets underway on Thursday 18th August at the North Harbour Stadium in Albany, when North Harbour of the Championship Division entertain Counties Manukau (Steelers) from the Premier Division. For sponsorship reasons, the tournament will be known as the ITM Cup in 2016. Both teams will be anxious to get off to a winning start in 2016, having failed to make any impact on their respective divisions in 2015, when they both failed to make it through to the knockout stages. The Steelers finished in fifth position in the Premier Division in 2015, with four wins and six defeats. A record that left them a full nine points adrift of the play-off places, and only four points above relegated Manawatu.

North Harbour likewise, finished in fifth position in the Championship Division, managing just three wins and seven losses. They were just two points behind Bay of Plenty, who were beaten by eventual winners Hawke's bay in the semi-finals. North Harbour have had an impressive set of pre-season results, putting 60 points on Northland, before defeating Auckland by 45-21, and wrapping up their preparations with a hard fought 17-14 success against Hawke's Bay. The Steelers were beaten 10-14 by Taranaki, before despatching Samoa "A" 43-3 in warm up matches. They wrapped up pre-season with an evening entitled the "Game of Three Halves", which involved Northland and the All Blacks as well as the Steelers. Counties defeated Northland 24-5, before losing to the All Blacks 5-35.

Both North Harbour and Counties-Manukau Steelers who meet at the QBE Stadium in Albany on Saturday, are looking for their second win of the 2015 ITM Cup. While the two sides are both flirting with the bottom position in their respective divisions, neither is yet detached from the top four play-off positions, and will keep themselves in the mix, should they managed to win Saturday’s clash. North Harbour need to bounce back from the disappointment of last week’s defeat to Hawke’s Bay in Napier, in a match which doubled as a Ranfurly Shield Challenge. Despite only managing one win in 2015, a narrow 26-25 success in Invercargill against Southland, and sitting in sixth position in the Championship, they are a mere two points behind fourth placed Southland.

The Steelers are also in sixth place, in their case in the Premiership. Their only win in five outings, came in Week 1 when they squeezed home 36-35 against Manawatu, who now prop up the ladder. Counties Manukau hold a five point advantage over Manawatu, but by the same token, they trail third placed Taranaki by just five points. Although the match is likely to be closer than the last meeting of the teams, when Counties triumphed 44-14 in Albany in 2013, the result looks likely to be the same. Pushing Manawatu closer to the drop, and keeping the Steelers in the play-off hunt.

On the ITM Cup this week, North Harbour and Counties Manukau will play in North Shore City at 19:35 local time and 07:35 GMT on Tuesday, September 4th. North Harbour, like all of the other teams on the ITM Cup table right now, have only had the opportunity to play two games, and they lost both of those, earning zero points for their troubles. Their competitor this week, Counties Manukau, is also on the board with six points, and have more than anyone else right now, after winning one of the two games that they played.
