Time is running out rapidly for the hapless Northland Taniwhas to record their first win of the 2015 ITM Cup. Six games have brought six defeats, and not so much as a solitary bonus point as any sort of consolation. On Friday they will attempt to break that losing sequence when they face the Bay of Plenty Steamers at the Toll Stadium in Whangarei.

The Steamers although currently in third place on the Championship table, are only four points clear of the sixth place North Harbour. In such a tight battle to join the Magpies and the Lions in the post-season play-offs, a trip to Whangarei, must be seen by the Steamers as a must win contest. Counties Manukau put 40+ points on the Taniwhas in Whangarei last week, while the Steamers travelled to the Magpies and ran them close in a Ranfurly Shield challenge, going down by 17-23.

It is difficult to imagine that Northland can turn their season round to any degree at all at this late stage. They have managed a mere seven tries in six fixtures, while the 31 tries and 229 points conceded, are all by some distance the worst statistics in the 2015 Championship.

Northland against the Bay of Plenty is hardly to set too many pulses racing this weekend, as both sides sit at the bottom of the ITM Cup takes. The Bay will be playing in the Championship next season after a disastrous campaign, during which they have recorded just a single victory.

Not that Northland have faired much better, with just a single success to their name in the Championship, and with one defeat this week already recorded against them. Both sides will look to end the season on a high. Or at least the relative high of a victory, which they hope will be the signal of better things to come next time round.

Although the fixture could produce a mountain of points, that in all likelihood, will be because of the poor defensive structure of the sides, rather than through any outstanding attacking qualities on show, from either team. Though of course, if Whangarei sees both sides at their error strewn worse, the expected sparse crowd, might have to endure a rather low scoring, mistake riddled end of season affair, in which even the winners, won't really deserve the match points.
