The second fixture of week 1 in the 2016 Provincial Championship ITM Cup (Mitre 10 Cup), sees an all Championship Division clash at the Northland Events Centre in Whangarai, between Northland (Taniwhas) and Manawatu (Turbos). To some degree, the draw has been kind to these two sides, pitting them against each other. Both had woeful campaigns in 2015, with Northland finishing at the foot of the Championship after losing all 10 of their matches, and securing just a solitary try-scoring bonus point for their efforts. Manawatu also finished at the foot of their ladder, the Premiership. Three wins and a total of 19 points, were not enough to avoid them dropping into the second tier of the tournament.

If Pre-season results are anything to go by, then 2016 could be yet another long and hard slog for the Taniwhas. Beaten 10-64 in their first run out against North Harbour, they were subsequently beaten 26-49 by Bay of Plenty, and in the "Game of Three Halves" they suffered losses to Counties 5-24 and the All Blacks 0-73. The Turbos have not fared much better, and a promotion challenge doesn't look likely going into Friday's opener, with 26-33 and 14-24 losses to Wellington and Tasman respectively in war up contests.

Two of last seasons ITM Cup Championship also runs clash on Sunday when Northland meet Manawatu at the Toll Stadium in Whangarei. Despite a poor 2013 campaign, Manawatu who finished in fifth position in the regular season table, with four wins and six defeats, were only two points off of making the knockout phase of the tournament. Eventually being piped to the last slop by Southland. Conceding 44 tries in their 10 fixtures, the worse in the division, and also having the worst points difference of -151, it was probably justice that they did in fact miss out on the semi-finals. Those statistics alone will tell everyone where they need to make improvements, if they hope to have a better 2014, and make a serious challenge for honors. Two wins and a draw was as good as it got in 2013 for Northland, as they trailed in sixth place in the Championship, with just North Harbour to prop them up at the bottom of the table. Although they did concede less tries than Otago who finished in second place.

It is difficult to imagine that either of these sides will make sufficient strides to make a real challenge for humors, and they may well have to accept that being in the hunt for a knockout place, will in itself be success in 2014.

On the ITM Cup this week, Northland and Manawatu are going to be playing in Whangarei at 19:35 local time and 07:35 GMT on Wednesday, September 5th. Northland takes the fourth spot in the Championship Stadndings right now, having won of the two games that they have played so far this season. They were able to grab five points from that game, and that puts them in a good position with the other teams on the board, with two more teams earning five points each after a win from their two games.

As for the leader of the ITM Cup right now, it is Counties Manukau with six points, after winning one of their two games. Our competitor this week, Manawatu, takes the seventh spot on the table after losing both games.
