Northland Taniwhas host the Wellington Lions on Thursday at the Toll Stadium in Whangarei in Round 6 of the 2016 ITM Cup. The Northland Taniwhas have played six fixtures this season, and have been beaten on each occasion, leaving them sixth of the seven competing sides in the Championship Division. Only the Southland Stags who are also winless in the current campaign are below them in the table. The Lions are second in the table, with four wins and just one defeat, and look like the only side capable of overhauling Otago at the summit of the ladder, and given that at the end of Round 5 they trail the Razorbacks by 10 points, even though they have a game in hand, that appears unlikely.

For the Lions, the realistic target would seem to be finishing second, and thereby avoiding Otago in the semi-finals, while securing a home match in the last four for themselves. Wellington's only reverse came at Otago, where they were well beaten by 21-44. Since when they have recorded three straight victories, two of which have been on home soil, in their only previous appearances in front of their own fans in 2016.

Northland and Wellington will both be seeking their first win of the 2014 ITM Cup season when they clash at the Toll Stadium on Saturday. The first round of matches brought heartbreak for Championship side Northland, as they slipped to a late home defeat to Manawatu by 23-28. While Wellington who had topped the regular season Premiership table in 2013, found themselves being outclassed by a Waikato side that had failed to even make the semi-finals last season, eventually sliding to a 25-37 reverse. After a poor 2013 campaign in which they had scored the fewest number of points in the division, Northland showed plenty of attacking ideas in week 1, but they turned over far too much possession to make the most effective use of that intent, and falling off tackles late in the game eventually cost them dear.

The Wellington Lions will point to injuries as an excuse for the poor showing in week 1. They certainly had out an inexperienced pack, and had to include Fa'atonu Fili at first-five late in the day, which did suggest that they would be up against it when they faced Waikato. With the return of experienced front-rowers Motu Matu'u and Reggie Goodes, the pack will certainly be bolstered, while Fili will have had the benefit of an extra week to work with Shaun Treeby in the backs.
