Saturdays ITM Cup match at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, between the Otago Razorbacks and the visiting Tasman Makos, promises to be a fascinating matchup. The Razorbacks have started the 2016 campaign in outstanding form, and have already recorded four bonus point victories, to open up a nine point gap at the top of the Championship table. While Premiership outfit the Makos have a little bit of ground to make up on the teams above them in the table, as despite two wins from three fixtures, they have failed to secure a solitary bonus point, the only side in either division of the tournament not to have done so at the end of Round 3.

Otago started the campaign with two wins against Southland and Wellington, scoring 40+ points in each fixture. While Round 3 saw closer outcomes, they were faced with two games in five days, and came through with bonus point successes against Northland 33-28 in Dunedin and 33-32 away to the Bay of Plenty. All three of The Tasman Makos fixtures so far have been against fellow Premiership Division sides. They have won both home games, against Waikato 24-19 and Taranaki 25-20, but came badly unstuck when they travelled to Christchurch and were beaten 14-45.

Although Championship side Otago staged a stunning comeback last week to defeat the reigning ITM Cup Champions, Taranaki by 34-27, after trailing by 6-22 at the interval, it was a win against a side that has struggled to find any sort of form in defence of their title. On Friday, they entertain last seasons runners up, Tasman Makos, at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, and come up against a side that has continued in the same vein as the 2014 season, and top the Premiership table, having won their opening three fixtures, and secured a try-scoring bonus point on each occasion. Last week's win for Otago, which came with a try-scoring bonus point, all four of their tries coming in the second period, are the only points they have recorded so far in 2015, and leave the team in fifth position on the Championship ladder.

Tasman's latest win, was by 41-21 in Blenheim against Manawatu, and they look like the side to beat during the early stages of the new campaign. Although Canterbury are just a point adrift in second spot, it is the Makos who have been by far the most impressive team in the tournament to date. Not only are the Makos running in tries for fun, but they have fly-half Marty Banks in imperious form with the boot, adding another five penalties and three conversions last week, adding to his claim for a spot in Super Rugby next time around.
