There may be a month of the regular season still to play, but Fridays match at the Yarrow Stadium in New Plymouth looks like it could decide which of the sides, Taranaki Bulls or Waikato Mooloos, will make it through to the post-season play-offs. Taranaki the reigning Champions are currently in fourth place, with a four point advantage over their visitors, but having played a game more.

If Taranaki, who come into the game on the back of three successive victories, after a disastrous start to the defence of their title, can stretch their lead over the Mooloos to eight or nine points, given their run in, it would be difficult to see them being able to claw that gap back, even though the Bulls themselves have a very tricky fixture list to finish the season.

The Mooloos have to face Canterbury, second in the Premiership, and the top two in the Championship, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington in the final four matches, while the Bulls also have to face Canterbury, but also play Tasman the current Premiership table leaders in their final three games. With their title literally on the line on Friday, Taranaki may just feed off of what is sure to be a vociferous and passionate crowd, enough to scrap a vital win.
